Here's a new one... I'm coming into work this morning, just cruising along, and it's like someone turned a switch. The truck just shuts down. I coast to the side of the road, trying to avoid rolling over a couple imports, and it starts right up again. It's never happened before. Any ideas?

P. S. I wish I'd bought a 12ver back in 98...

Hey Nate -

Did you check for codes after it happened? Might give you a clue to your problem...

My truck did something like that once. It has always had a "stumble" that was like someone turning the key off and then back on real fast, but one time I was sitting at a stoplight and it just died. Just like you turned off the key. All the guages went out, the radio quit, and it the starter wouldn't crank until I turned the key all the way off and back on. I suspect that it "stumbled" at idle and the transmission drug it down to where it stalled.

I've been back to dodge several times about this and they tell me that the truck is up to date as far as the ECM is concerned and that they can't do anything about it. One idiot even told me that it might be caused by a cell phone from a nearby car, he didn't like it when I told the service manager that it was absurd to me that I couldn't drive my truck around anyone that was using a cell phone without it acting stupid.

Needless to say I am not now nor have I ever been very impressed with the dodge service.

Anyhow, good luck

Mike

<edit> They never have found any codes in my truck when I have taken it back for service.

You might check fuel pressure from the boost pump. . Mine did the same thing when the boost pump died. Check engine light never came on, but dealer found a code when repairs were made.

On a Cat engine if the camshaft position sensor is bad and loses its signal sometimes, it will make the engine shutdown right away because the injectors don't know when to inject the fuel. Then you can start it and it will run for awhile again.

I don't know for sure but I think the early 24v had a cam and a crankshaft sensor (later 24v have only a cam sensor). Maybe your sensor or wiring is bad and the fuel pump is losing its signal on when to inject the fuel.
