My dad has a stock 01. 5' 3500, 5 spd. ,4x4 that has some issues. The truck runs fine but sometimes if you shift and push the throttle, nothing happens. It did it a few times last year then stopped, and now it does it a lot. Eventually it will go again, but it takes awhile. I was hauling our tractor(trailer and tractor about 20k) and took off from a stoplight which was on a hill and shifted from 2nd to 3rd and nothing, after I almost came to a complete stop it took off again. Is there an APPS, or TPS on these or could it be something else? I tried searching on here, but dial up is rediculous out in the boonies. Thanks.

These trucks do have an APPS and it is a typical weak spot. See the thread "Anatomy of an APPS" here on the 24 valve forum and you'll have plenty of reading.

Usually, if it were the APPS, it would flip a code. I had a similar problem with my 99 and traced it back to the lift pump. If you haven't replaced the lift pump yet, regardless of the apps, it would be wise to do so. You have 2 choice (in terms of price and replacement), 1) go to Napa, Cummins, Advance Auto parts, or some other place other than a Dodge dealership and they will sell you a lift pump like the one on your truck for around $100 and it will be fairly easy to replace. Or you can go to a Dodge dealership, they will sell you an in-tank replacement (that will not supply your injector pump with enough fuel pressure under load) for somewhere in the neighborhood of $400-600. The in-tank is significantly harder to install. When I replaced mine, I went to Cummins South to buy mine, replaced it, and it has lasted twice as long as the stock (I personally think it is because I make it a point to not spill fuel on it when replacing the filter, now). If you do go to Cummins, they will require some info on the I. D plate on the timing cover, I think it's the engine serial #.

We replaced the lift pump, and the truck still does the same thing. Now we have a p1693 code which is a companion code I think. Can we take the truck to Auto Zone or some place like that to see if there is another code off of one of their scanners? Thanks guys

JGoss as long as the check engine light is on AutoZone will ba able to read it. If not you may have to find a local shop with a computer to read it. Or if you know some one with a Smarty they can read it as well.
