78,000 miles; here's the to-do now done list

new tires Michelin LTX A/S -- six of them

new wheels, Alcoas

new rotors, pads, shoes

leaking steering box given new seals

new left front axle seal

2 1/2 inch lift front

1 inch lift rear (add a leaf)

Rancho 9000 shocks all around

re-allignment (to go with the lift)

new transmission ????? (still in shop, don't know whats wrong)

Getting everything into cherry condition so I can trade it and get none of my money back

The transmission thing happened last Saturday -- downshifted while stopping at a stop light, heard a 'clunk', then no gears. After a couple hours forced it into 4th then drove to shop on one gear. Still haven't heard what the problem is.

On the bright side -- if it's dead I'll have them put in a 6 speed.

I originally put a one inch block in the back but then had the suspension shop put in an extra leaf instead. Here's the weird thing -- the truck rides better with the extra leaf! I thought the ride would get way stiff. Apparently the stock leafs had collasped completely! One side of the trick was resting on the overlaods and the other side was 3/4 of an inch ablove the overloads. The re-arched the stock leafs and added a leaf to the packs. Much better riding now.

Yep, the replaced steering box is leaking. Still cheaper then a new box. $200 salvage, $80 to re-seal, still less then $750 box only

Mark, sorry to hear it actually was the synchro as i speculated in your other post. Did the guys at the transmission shop have any idea as to how one would break? Whjat was the oil like when they tore into it? Steve

Was'nt that about the price for a complete rebuilt 4500 with the improved output shaft (5th gear problem)?

I forget the link for the big manual trans man, the guy with the nice replacment shaft for 5th gear, but somebody here should know it

The verdict is back. Bad 3-4 synchro in the transmission. $1400 to repair. Ouch.

I'll look into it. I'd hate to have to do this again in another 78000 miles. Price just went up another $140 for a pair of special clamps they have to replace along with the new synchros.

I'll call them first thing in the morning and ask about the input shaft. Probably too late now to do anything but fix my old one. Problem is I'm stuck paying for the tear-down regardless and that's a-lot of the labor.

Frankly, I'm really surprised. Other then the 5th gear nut these NV4500s are bullet proof. I'd be really surprised to hear my 5th gear nut fell off since I never, ever, lug the engine.

Combine the transmission fix with the new rotors, axle seal, steering box seal, brakes and I'm making a down payment on a new truck when I pick it up tomorrow.

$750 For a Steering Box?

Where are you guys pricing these gear boxes at?

I bought a new one with a warrenty from Auto Zone for $225,

and priced one at a Federated Autoparts store for $315.

You sure that's the right box for the truck? $750 is dealer price (of-course... . 'normal' times three) but none of the parts stores around here could get one for a one ton 4x4.

Not very consistent...

Evan... lay the name, phone number, or address on the board... for that price I will buy one. Others probably will, too. I think last summer you said they were going for 90 dollars. (Vaughn)
