hi,

my mom has a 2nd gen CTD with auto transmission, 80K miles on it. just yesterday, it started doing something strange. her driveway is on a slight incline. she puts the shift lever in "Park" turns the truck off, and it rolls down the hill making loud clicking noises from what sounds to be the transmission (the rear wheels rolling as it makes the noises). she can stop the truck with the brake pedal. the emergency brake will also hold the truck still.

I conclude from this that there is something wrong with the park pawl not being able to lockup the planetary gear. Can the notch in the pawl wear off over time? Or maybe a spring has failed? I've worked on these on passenger cars before, but never taken one apart on a CTD. I'm trying to figure out exactly what part of the pawl mechanism might have gone bad.

Has anyone made this repair? If so, any special tools needed and approximate time to do it? Can pawl parts be purchased apart from a rebuilt transmission?

All suggestions appreciated.

Thanks.

I'd say the shift linkage isn't adjusted right or the spring is broken in the parking pawl .

Make sure the shift lever at the trans is going all the way forward in park. Of course, you need to block the wheels first!!!

One more thing, have someone move the shifter while you are under the truck ( again with the wheels blocked ), and watch everything move. I had a friends truck that was real sloppy and we found a broken bolt on a frame bracket that allowed a lot of slop.
