did some tests at work went through injector kill test when driving #4&#5 injectors no good. truck didnot pop when shutting thoes injectors down,called star hotline told me to clean carbon off injector tips before they would send me new injectors under warr,the injectors from chrysler are on restriction and list price is$630. 00 a peice. will try to clean injectors tomorow

Wow... interesting work. I'm jealous that you have direct access to a DRB-III. If you can, please take some photos and tell us how you go about cleaning the injectors.

-Ryan :)

Remove injectors and clean with h/d carb cleaner and tooth brush did not get a chance yet but will keep you posted. star hot line told me it was caused by too much idle time

It seems that the phrase "too much idle time" is a favorite from STAR when it comes to our injectors. My truck is in the shop right now for an injector (among other things) and I was told that idling was the cause.

What kills me is that I hardly let my truck idle at all. Yes, I do a lot of short trip driving but idling is kept to a minimum. In the morning I fire it up and within 30 seconds I'm driving. I wonder if being stopped in traffic adds to idle time?

Yes, it does. And unless you live in the wide open spaces, sitting in traffic on your commute is a FACT of modern life for ANY modern vehicle.

So I guess DC only feels that these trucks are good for extended highway use? Not putzing around town, or job sites, or deliveries... ...

What a load of bull. :-{}

Let's face it: STAR found something they could say to people that would place blame on the customer and make people feel like "oh, I guess it's my fault". Rosco, even you're doing it by trying to convince yourself that they're right and you do idle too much! Their system is working!

I'm amazed that carbon deposits (in enough quantity to render an injector inoperative) could even stick to an injector that's pumping out 1600 bar fuel. Seems to me that if a deposit can survive that kind of punishment you'd have to grind it off, which would destroy the injector.

I'm not saying STAR is wrong... maybe they're telling the truth. But the whole thing just sounds a bit too convenient for them.

I would like to recind this post. It seems I was rather hasty in dismissing the cleaning of carbon deposits from the injectors. This DTR thread is very interesting (I'm Grey Rider over there).

I'm sorry if I mislead anyone. I guess maybe STAR does know best!

Ryan,

According to the shop foreman at my dealership when he called STAR about my injector he was transferred over to a Cummins tech who advised him as to what needed to be done. He said the Cummins guy was great and he wished the regular STAR techs were as helpful.

I also just read and posted on that thread over on the DTR (I'm Big Ed) and FWIW my dealer said that when they replaced my #6 injector the other day it had a lot of carbon build up on it too.

With the 3rd gen trucks the ecm does record idle time... ..... that makes it verifiable ;) It also records duty cycle... ... ... big brother is watching :-laf :-laf
