Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Truck stalling when put in gear

Truck surged at stoplight drove to parking lot fine, idled normal and I shut it down. Restarted normally and will die when shifted into gear. Revving doesn't help. Cycled key- Po 1492 ( amb/batt temp volt too high) Po 1693 (compainion code) P done no ECM code went to mileage. Why 1693 then? I unhooked the piggyback wiring for Big Hoss and returned to stock no help. Towed to Dodge. Suggestions?

Could it be the converter is in lock-up or damaged? Did you try to pull it into neutral quickly bypassing reverse or drive and will it stay running?

I did try that didn't help. Torque Conv. is locked up. Will drive weakly after resting. New Trans in future. Starting post for recomendations
