Hey guys my dad has an 01 with an automatic transmission. The truck has about 45000 miles on it when he goes to start the truck he heres ticking by just turning the key on. Im wondering maybe lift pump anyways when he puts the truck in drive it stalls. Has anyone had this happen to them b4? Thanks Nick.

When I was a kid I had an old hot rod that did the same thing - Had to start it up then kind of neutral drop it to go anywhere - (don't recommend that to dad or hell be replacing something other than what's actually bad). Then when you came top a stop it would stall if you forgot to put it in neutral. The TC was bad - I got another one and all was well.

Shouldn't it be under warranty from DC??? did he have 7/70 or only the 36k deal. If it's the TC, with the low miles he has on the bands & etc. , he might be able to get away with just doing a new TC & VB from one of the big transmission companies listed here

Mine stalls every so often when put in drive but it is because of the converter and it sounds like your dads is stock?

I think it might be under warranty and yes it is completly stock he drives like my grandma

Not saying this is true for every truck but mine did the same and if I I turned the Coomp timing down it didnt do it as bad ,,,but when I upgraded to the Vulcan Kit It doesnt do it at all ,,,

Not saying the Vulcan kit will fix it just saying my experience.

Good Luck

I had a similar problem but it was related to large injectors and the upgraded transmission. It is possible that getting the ECM flashed will help. Look at this: http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2000/18-15-00.htm

It fixed my truck for the most part.

Now if you are saying that it stalls every time he puts it in gear then I would say there is a problem with the VP or the transmission.

If its under warranty, get it to the shop. However I belive the transmission in not under the 5 year/100K deal so if its transmission related get him to a good transmission shop.

I reciently had this problem - my truck started stalling evertime I put it in gear to leave in the morning - I searched TDR and found a post by someone at Suncoast that said -

"tight TQ + large injectors = stalling at start - do the ecm flash"

I took the truck to DC dealer and they said it wouldn't help - I told them to do it anyway. It worked -hasn't stalled since. And I mean it stalled every morning. I use to have to restart is a couple times and then increase rpms to close to 1000 and put it in reverse to get going.

I don't know the TSB # but it is called 'cold start or hard start TSB' or something like that.

Hope this helps - it did me - Eric

we found out what it was guys the lift pump failed and in return killed the injector pump. it cost 700 dollars at the dealership the injector pump was under warranty but not the lift pump apparantly they only have a 36000 mile warranty. and another thing I dont think either part is cummins made what a crock its a good thing it wasnt my truck id be pretty ticked.

That is not true at all it is under warranty you better get your money back, I am a tech at a dlr and I know it's covered! They just took your money. The pump runs about 380. 00 what else did they do for the rest of the 320. 00? Labor usually is around 60 to 90 dollars an hr.

It takes about 10 minutes to do but I think they charge at least 1/2 hour labor... they may have even stuck me for the full hour #@$%! . I had the same symtoms and the reflash worked for me so I guess it was worth it. It's quit embarrassing when it would die every time I dropped it in gear.

who can I call or find out the information on the warranty should I call chrysler or another dealership I thought it seemed steep.

My truck's VP44 went out at 45K miles and the dealership replaced it under warranty but not the weak Carter lift pump that probably caused the failure in the first place - I guess they don't replace anything unless it's bad - bad.

I found TDR after that and found out about the infamous 24 V lift pump weakness issue and replaced the lift myself and another one ... ..... and then a FASS to end the problem --- and the bombing began -- I figured that mod alone would have voided my warranty so why not some injectors??

So I paid for the Hard Start TSB Reflash - $84 and I had them change my tire rpm to 626 to match the 295/75/16's while they were in there.

Proturbo is right,

If one is covered they are both covered. And $700 is way to high for a lift pump replacement. talk to the dealer service manager and if that doesn't work call chrysler. It was either a "service advisor mistake" or your getting screwed. Either way, somebody owes you $700.
