I posted a while back that I was getting excessive engine temperatures for running with no load (210-212 degrees), thanks to all those that replied. I have talked to a few cummins techs and they say that 210 is a problem, especially if it does not come down to normal. Last weekend it got to 205 and I could not hear the fan clutch kick in. I shut the truck off momentarily and sure enough the fan spun freely, no engagement what so ever.

Today I took the truck into dodge thinking that it would be covered by warranty, not so. I priced a new fan clutch and almost passed out, $400, holy frick!

So for the question, is my troubleshooting correct? Does anyone know about a more economical route to go? I don't want to spend $400 just to have it go out in 50,000 more miles. Electric fans would be good for me (very little towing) but I don't see them anywhere.

Any help will be very appreciated, and maybe I could stand to learn more about my truck (pretty new to the game)

Thanks

I put a couple of Napa slimline pusher fans on 03 trucks, and if I recall they were close to $200. For the extra $200 I would replace the factory clutch. It will pull 10x the air you can push with the electric.

I'm not sure an engine fan is the answer. I mean, is it hitting 210 on the highway? If so, there should be plenty of flow across the radiators and no need for the fan to be running.

Have you tried the thermostat?

Ryan

I did replace the thermostat, that fixed the heating issue on the highway, now it just seems to be in town, and there is definetly no engagement of the clutch. I have not ever heard a temp at which the clutch should kick in but 205 seems a little high for no engagement.

I heard from a reliable source that Flex-a-lite has fans on the way for these trucks in about a month and a half they are doing tow-testing (20,00lbs) and if all goes well they will be out soon, at about the same price as the ones for the 2nd gen. I think that I will just wait and see what they do, I usually drive the company rig so I guess that will take up the slack. Plus driving an f-150 around for a while is bound to make me appreciate the CTD a little more, right?

Again I thank you guys for the replies and help.
