Ok, I got this truck in and it wouldn't start(cranks fine). So I put a Fuel Shutoff Solenoid in it and it started right up. Ran great around the block. I came back and it sat for about 5 hours, then the owner came to get it. He got in and cranked but no start. Now I'm stuck. It has plenty of fuel(bled at injectors and fuel squirted the bottom of the hood), it has 12v at the connector on the Fuel shutoff solenoid. Its getting air. So what else is there. I'm not very familiar with the 1sr gens, but if these things get fuel, air and the FSS is working, they are supposed to run. What am I missing?

Is the truck turned up any? You probly blew the tip off the new plunger in the shutoff solenoid going around the block. Plus high mileage old worn out pumps will send metal pieces to the plunger and damage it as well. So even a stock pump (untouched) can damage the plunger. You can try removing the shutoff solenoid again, only this time do not install the spring and plunger. He'll need a choke cable for shutdown now. The pump has a mechanical lever for shutdown. No more key off.

I am curious bgilbert, if the injectors are squirting fuel all over the place when loosened and cranking, wouldn't one be correct to assume the FSS is working?

I am still toying with pulling the guts on my FSS just to see.

Well, I pulled the plunger and spring out of the new FSS and it stared right up. I don't understand this really. Nothing appeared to be wrong with the plunger. What was causing it not to work?

What was causing it not to work?

Well the answer to that is, the plunger was not lifting. But that isn't much of an answer. Apply curent to the solonoid with it out so you can see what it does. Try another solonoid or run it with the pull cable to stop it. It is pretty unhandy to have to lift the hood every time you want to stop the engine.

ALL electrical devices have a failure rate and looks like you got lucky two times in a row. Post the result when you clear the problem.

Make sure the wire connection is clean and tight, it can cause a no start. I've had to just touch mine in the past to make it work. I have since switched to ring terminals under the nut and nary a problem since.

Travis. .

I did test for voltage at the stud, not the connector. It was 12-13 volts and dropped to 9-10 while cranking. So instead of buying another FSS and worrying about it failing, the owner wants me to put a choke cable on it. I don't like that setup, but it isn't mine. By the way, the truck is stock.

It would not be as cheap as the choke cable but there is a large solonoid shut down mechanism that I have seen which you could install to pull the manual shut off lever.

Is that a normal voltage drop? I never checked one.

If it's not normal then I say fix that as it will bite you in the butt later. at the least opportune time.

Hey guys, where is this manual shutdown for the pump? I've seen the arm to prime the pump (at least that's what I assumed it was), but never noticed a shutdown lever.

It is the lever on the side of the pump. So get this. I went in today and installed the cable. Tried to start the truck, it wouldn't start. So I took the FSS(which is only serving as a plug) back out and put it back in and the truck started right up. I let it run a few minutes and tired the cable which works very well. Then tried to start it again. It won't start again. This thing is gonna drive me crazy. Any ideas?

The FSS gets two signals... one is the signal to 'open' (12Vdc) and then, when the engine is running it drops the 12Vdc signal and is maintained open by a 10Vdc maintainence signal... . or so I've been told...

I also agree with the guys here,,,the spade connections can become a real pain in the aft section if you know what I mean.

pb.....

Sounds like the problems I was having which were one or both of the following, clogged filter, and air leaking into rusty fuel line to tank. Put temperary tank an new line in bed, added sediment type filter before fuel pump. Now it starts imeadiatly everytime. Thanks to TDR post I read on rusty fuel line, saved me pulling injection pump.

Check the compression. The head gaskets like to blow out between the cylinders. . I have seen some that do not run at all when this happens.

Another thing that happens is one of the 2 pump springs will break . This causes the pump piston to stick or drag from getting load from only one side. Things contract when they get cold !
