My 2000 sputtered and quit running this afternoon. When trying to restart it, it will not fire only try to turn over. It did turn over once but it sounded like it was hitting on one cylinder and stopped running just like that. This year Ram shows no codes in the dash. I had it towed to the local Dodge dealer for tomorrow morning. Any clue what this may be? Are the lift pump and fuel pump the same and the warranty book only shows the fuel pump covered, it doesn't list the lift pump I dont believe.

Thanks for help, James

You have a lift pump and an injection pump. The injection pump is covered by the engine warranty, some dealers cover the lift pump also. You didn't just fill the tank did you? Might be water. Also sounds strange that it "it will not fire only try to turn over". Might be battery/electrical failure. bg

Change fuel Filter 1st... . should be the starting point (Least expensive)... . make certain the system is primed after this is completed... .

My '00 2500 will give me P-Codes when I cycle the key. That shoudn't matter anyway unless you had a flashing check engine light and then the failure occured. I would go with what AHann suggested. I always keep a spare fuel filter in the truck for this reason.

Sounds like electrical problem. Battery , low. cable ,loose , Clutch switch bad, Loose or broken wire , Fuse ,relay, or fusible link, Water in tank ,Gasoline in tank. Bad diesel. Keep checking ,watch what they do ,do not let them do any thing with out you knowing in advance like re flash . Lift pump covered by 10000 mi warranty and injector pump too. Actualy, Ron is right. It does sound like an electrical problem because the engine isn't cranking properly. I would trickle charge both batteries and check the alternator, battery terminals, etc.

Luck is with you ,but a lift or injector pump will hot keep the motor from cranking . Do take a new pump though. Ron Bissett in metro Louisville KY

I believe he stated it would crank, just not fire(or start). So that rules out electrical, and points to you know what, injection pump. Just make sure they put in a new filter, and lift pump, too.

my '01 did the same thing about 2 years ago. just crusin on the highway,,started spittin and sputter'in and shut down. turned over fine but wasn't gettin fuel. in the relay box under the hood,,from the underside of the fuel pump relay the hot wire had came loose. had mine roll backed to dealer too. soon as they hooked the scan tool they found it. i had switched relays around thinking it might have went bad but no luck. who would of thought the wire that feeds it would have come loose. i know of 2 other trucks that had the same wire come off.

let us know !!!

Got the truck back from the dealer yesterday and it runs great after having the injection pump replaced. Even feels like it has more pickup. The service department was closed when I picked it up so I didn't get to ask what the Filter Package was listed on the invoice. Is this basically a new fuel filter?
