So a friend of mines truck 05 5. 9 6 speed stuck full throttle in 3rd gear pulling on the highway with a trailer he was able to get it shut down but nothing makes any sense now it not even throwing a code and is running fine. The other syptoms it did have at the time after he turned the key off it didn't want to start then started finally and would only idle it had dead pedal then all the sudden the pedal started responding again and now its acting fine.

Dealer told us apps and that they had never seen a full throttle problem with the apps. So any suggestion and experiences would be good. Where would be the best place to purchase a apps dealer wants 500$ is a little steap.

Thanks,

Shane

A friend of mine had a similar problem. Map sensor had some oil on it from his air filter. over oiled it a bit too much. he used some brake cleaner and cleaned the sensor off and it was fine after. worth a try to see if its oily.

Does he own a Toyota too?

You thinking viral transfer here? Parked too close together?? :-laf:-laf

APPS would be my guess. Should be some codes in the ECU that may clarify it. Need to scan it with a scan tool to find all of them.

An EB is not going to going to make the MAP sensor dirty, thats all past the turbo. If the MAO is getting dirty there is an issue in the charge air system somewhere.

Sometimes we step in things and transfer those items w/o realizing it.

But in all seriousness... it would be interesting to hear about the findings.

I had a similar issue. I was waiting for my turn at the fuel pump and the motor took off as if I went to wide WOT. I shut the truck down and restarted and it was fine. Up in to the point I had some intermitten peddle problems and suspected the APPS was going bad. I had my dealer locate me one on my traval plan as I was on a 15 hour ride and installed it in the parking lot. It fixed the problem and has been fine for about 100k. The part cost me $375 and took 10 minutes to change.

APPS: Accellerator Pedal Postition Sensor. Box located on the drivers side wheel well liner. Tells the computer where your foot is on the pedal at all times so it can manage fuel.

They were a real problem on 2nd gen 24 valve trucks because it was mounted close to the engine and suffered heat problems.

I had a similar problem with my 04. 5. On the highway I noticed the trans came out of lock up, then it downshifted and took off. I hit the brakes and the truck went to idle with no throttle pedal. I aldo noticed my tach and speedo froze at the time if the incident. I believe the pcm is programmed to disable throttle when the brakes are applied during full throttle. I limped to the shoulder, had to start it a few times to get the throttle back. I did however have a check engine light with a apps code. Replaced the apps and its been fine ever since.

APPS is still on the engine if its an automatic 03-04. Only manuals have them mounted under the battery. From 05 on they are mounted on the top of the accelerator pedal inside the truck.

The 3rd gen implementation has a lot more testing and calibration done by the ECU. They essentially reset every time the truck is started, many less issues that way.

So far the truck hasn't repeated the problem. Who knows hopefully it won't do it again it's one thing to get a little toyota shutdown but kinda scary when the ole cummins takes off.

The truck is long past warranty with 187k other then this it's been trouble free.

It would be nice if it would throw a check engine light or code so it could just be fixed but nothing can be that simple I guess.
