I was reading the newest Truck Trend magazine.

The last page happens to be on the 2nd Gen Ram.

It goes on to say

"For the towing inclined, two more engines are attractive. The Cummins built 5. 9-liter inline-six turbodiesel makes a mere 160 horsepower (it would be boosted to 215 in the 2001 models) but a Winnebago-tugging 420 pound-feet of torque... "

Where does this 2001 spec come from? My 98. 5 is 215hp stock. My buddy had an 01 and that was 235 hp (auto trans)

Am I mis-informed?

Oh. . I was checking to see if I could email the fellow that wrote the article, Michael Cook.

I see that... .

Editor at Large (whatever that is) is G. R. Whale. Is that the same guy that writes in the TDR magazine???

Looks like Greg Whale (if its is the same) might have missed something.

The 160/420 sounds about right for the first of the "2nd gen's", in 1994. I think '97 had a 215hp with 5spd manual trans. A friend has a '98 12v 5spd, its a 215, but not real shure of the tourqe. 450??? My 98. 5 24v was 235hp to start with, TQ at 460, but thats a 5spd, too. The "boost" to 215 for '01 may be a spec for the auto trans, but I thought the autos got 215 earlier than that... ... . ???? edit: duh... Nate's is a 215hp from '98. 5. I'd guess somthin in that article got tangled up. It shur aint right...

In '01 both the 5 speed manual and the 4 speed auto were rated for 235hp and 460lb-ft of torque, while the HO version with the NV5600 transmission was rated for 245hp and 505lb-ft of torque. The other main difference was the manuals came with the Dana 80 rear while the auto came with the Dana 70 rear.
