Hello guys, I have a 97 2500 with the 12 valve cummins and a manual transmission. The truck has about 285,000 on it and I am having some trouble with either the transmission or the clutch. I'm not sure which one. The truck takes a long time to get moving and when it does it wont go much past 15 mph, it just revs at take off and barely moves. It does seem to get better once I run around 2300 rpms just trying to get it to move down the road for a little while but not much. Can you guys give me some thoughts on where I should start looking? Thanks in advance.

Umm... ... ... I'd say you need a clutch, NOW.

Did this happen suddenly or has it gotten progressively worse? Either way, you'll need to replace the clutch.

Actually, I wasn't kidding. It's my brothers truck and I was asking the question going off of what he told me but thanks for the saracstic repsonse it was really helpful (hsmith). Do any of you guys replace the clutch with an OEM one or is it best to go with a south bend or something else? Cost is an issue for him, thats the only reason I'm asking about the OEM one. Thanks

I would suggest at least a Con-O from SBC. I ran one for a long time until increasing power then went to the OFE. I'd also go for the SBC HD hydraulics, replace the fork pivot ball, and check the shift fork GOOD since it's been over-heated.

SBC has great products and you will not beat their customer service. Just give Peter a call and take his advice.

I understand cost being an issue, been there before, too. I would beg, borrow, or steal to get enough for the Con-O. I've had customers go with cheaper clutches that end up costing more due to labor costs etc. Do it right the first time.

Sarcastic??? Your original post was not what would be a good clutch choice, but rather why it would not move, literally. No offense intended.

I'd also go for the SBC HD hydraulics

A '97 shouldn't need the HD hydraulics, at least that's what Peter told me when I was converting to the G56.

With 40k trouble free towing miles on my South bend flywheel and clutch with stock hydraulics I'd tend to think he was right!

The hydro recommendation is from my experience and personal preference. When we installed mine, I thought something was wrong with the clutch, too smooth, too light. It's the hydraulics. We've had the same response from several cutomers we've installed them on. May not be a necessity, but it sure is nice. Peter will shoot him straight.
