Hi, I have a 99, 24 valve with 105,000 and change. I changed my fuel filter tonight and cannot get the engine to run. I tried to bleed the air via the brass plug, but I get no fuel or even any air out this plug. I bumped the motor several times and can hear the pump running but still no fuel. Could this be the lift pump in the tank if so why did changing the filter cause it to stop working. Are the lift pumps expensive and are they hard to change. Thanks for the help Tom

Just had the same problem with my 12v engine. Here is some help. First, check all fuel fittings and make sure they are tight. Check all rubber hoses on fuel system for cracks (that will cause the problem too)... Next, just replace the lift pump if original they run about 100 dollars. Finally, it could always be the dreaded vp44 !!!

When you open the filter, it allows the fuel in the line to drain back to the tank. The lift pump is located below and to the rear of the fuel filter and is mounted to the side of the engine, not hard to change I understand but a little difficult to get to. The pump should be available from a dealer or a truck parts outlet that sells Cummins parts. bg

I have the same problem everytime I change my filter. You just have to be patient and bump the starter and let the pump cycle several times then try to start repeat this until she fires up. Do not grind the starter too much.

Chances are it wasn't working before you changed the filter. If you buy a lift pump go to Cummins, they are half the price as the dealer, I paid $148 at Cummins a few months back. By the way the lift pump is on the side of the engine not in the tank, there is no pump in the tank.

It would be possible to get the truck started by filling the fuel filter canister with fuel and pressurizing the fuel tank with a few pounds of air, it may take a while but you could get it somewhere to get it fixed. I wouldn't suggest driving it too far though.

My next thought is to tell you to get a fuel pressure gauge installed so that you can monitor the health of your lift pump in the future. Some last 100,000 miles some last 2,000 miles. The lack of a good lift pump will eventually ruin the VP-44.

If you did not fill the filter with fuel you have air in the system you need to keep bleeding the fuel sys also loosen the inj lines and crank until you get a good pop from them. Then it should start I have had cust bring them to me on a trailer with the same problem.

Great advice from diesel demon. Doesn't sound like pump is bad if you were just maintaining your filter. Lift pump is over 300. 00 at Dodge, 155. 00 at Cummins . Only problem I had was Cummins didn' t have it when I needed it . Geno's garage has a fuel pressure kit for 69. 00 dollars with a free dash mount if you ask for at time of purchase, comes with everything you need.
