My first time to post, so hopefully I don't break any rules. Filled up my truck ('99 24V 4X4, Auto Quad Quad) with fresh fuel after sitting almost pegged on empty. Ran fine for 15 miles all the way home. Went out 2 hours later it started then promptly died 5 seconds later and will not start.

Here's what I've looked at:

Drained some fuel from the water separator, seemed clean with no water. Thinking bad fuel.

Cracked the banjo on the filter top from the Lift pump and had my son bump start. No fuel from fitting. I can here the LP cycle, but does seem to sound different.

Drained water separator/filter and with drain open bump started and no fuel from from drain hose.

Took fuel filter off and looks clean (changed 5,000 miles ago)

Tried to read codes using on-off-on-off-on procedure with no luck. I'll try again. Maybe run to Auto-Zone for a reader and pressure gauge.

I'm thinking lift pump is bad and hopefully the Injector Pump hasn't failed also. My plans are to put a new fuel filter in and a lift pump in the morning ($245 from dealer). Am I on the right track? Anything else I can do to diagnose either pump? I don't have a fuel gauge installed but after this it will be my next purchase. I'm in a time crunch now. My family and I are supposed to be on the road the day after tomorrow. Navy's moving us from Jacksoville, FL to Colorado Springs, CO to play with the Air Force. Luckily, my father-in-law has lots of tools. Mine are packed up. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I would think yu are on the right track with the lift pump. Definately need fuel from it to check the injector pump. Good luck!

for get the dealer ,go to Cummins for the fuel pump cost less ,make sure you get the latest pump. If only five thousand on old filter keep if for a spar . After install bleed out on top of the filter two pipe plugs on 99 one nearest to front of truck then one of the injector lines or three if you have to . Just crack them. LOL Ron Bissett in Metro Louisville KY Oo. /////////// Get the filter there too //////////

Update and thanks

Thanks Ron and bpenrod for the quick response. I apologize for not responding sooner... made it to Colorado but have been without internet until now.

It was the LP. Picked one up at Southeast Cummins in Jacksonville, FL (Great folks!) for $160 along with a new fuel filter. An hour and a half later the truck was back up and running and next morning we were on the road to Colorado Springs. Without TDR who knows how much it would have cost me.

By-the-Way. Made it to Dallas to see my folks, pulling a 6000 lb boat and a Harley in the back of the truck. It was then and there I decided to loose the muffler, opened up the air box and added some horses and torque with the Superchip programmer. What a difference. Wish I had done it long ago.

Thanks again.
