Archived Truck Won't Run Code P0286

My truck dead and will not start or run. Earlier today it shuttered but i thought it was just bad fuel, but apparently not. Drained the fuel filter, but I didn't look at the fuel filter, just drained the water.

Now it died in rush hour traffic and will not start. If you give it throttle and it will run for 2-3 sec and die again.

It has an engine code (EDIT P0628 not P0286). Help...

It is 2003 Auto 2500 4x4 almost 85000mi on it.
I haven't replaced anything, but fluid/filters, tires & brakes.

from what I have read, sounds like a lift pump. Open the drain for the fuel filter and turn the key on. You should be able to hear a soft whir from the fuel tank and have fuel coming out of the tube onto the ground. If you do have fuel coming out I would make sure that the valve is closed, turn the key on, let it sit for 10 seconds, bump the starter and let it run for another 30. Then try and start.

I looked in the service manual for an 05 and can't find code P0286

Checked the code again it is P0628. Apparently I'm dyslexic.

I also think that it is the lift pump. I don't have a fuel pressure gauge.

I'm going to order one in the morning. What lift pump should I get? I'd rather get something better than a stock one. Any good venders who ship FedEx?

P0628 Low voltage detected at fuel pump.



check fuse 17 20Amp for open.



Connector C6 on ECM to ground. Should be able to read through the motor on the pump.

I'm at my 2nd job so I can't check it right now. I've been doing a lot of reading and I'm now very sure it is the lift pump. Would you agree?

I Bought an Air Dog FP-100 this morning and having it shipped overnight to me. I also bought a full set of gauges from Genos (Fuel, EGT, Trans Temp).



I think I'm still going to the air dog through the stock filter and not directly into the CP3 pump. I don't have any power mods so I don't see this as an issue. I also read that you can bump up the pressure with the check valve on the fp-100.



What is the best place to install the fuel pressure gauge? I would guess at the input of the CP3 pump. I didn't buy the modified banjo fitting from Genos. I'll just have to make/modify one.

I have my banjo bolt at the inlet of the CP3 to read fuel pressure. You can easily tell when the fuel filter is getting plugged around 10K miles.

Not to overlook something embarrassingly obvious, but how much fuel is in the tank? ... and keep in mind that you can't always trust the fuel gauge either!

I'm running Walbro pump and Vulcan bigline stuff ... nothing stock between the tank and the injection pump.

If you need some kind of stock fitting, I probably have it sitting in my shop!<O</O

It has around 3/4 of a tank of fuel. I just filled up late last week.

Be sure and replace your fuel filter too. You'd be amazed how much a dirty filter can decrease the fuel pressure at the injection pump (this is speaking from personal experience watching a fuel pressure gauge). Also keep in mind that a really dirty fuel filter doesn't necessarily have to visually appear dirty when you pull it out... probably just dark colored.

Code 628: Fuel pump relay circuit low, or Fuel lift pump control circuit low.



Seems like something (relay,control circuit) isn't getting enough juice(electric power).



Going to after market fuel pump is a good idea.

It is not fuse #17. On my 2003 fuse #17 is not used. I didn't see anyone that was labeled for a fuel pump.

I don't have a FSM what fuse and relay is it on a 2003?

I got the truck fixed on Friday.



I had some problems with the bracket to hold the air dog and had to make some modifications to it. It does not fit 4x4 quad cab trucks.



I ran the new fuel line into the current fuel filter canister. This was accomplished by drilling out the hole where the factory fuel pump connects to and tapping the hole with 1/2 NPT. I was then able to buy a 90 deg 1/2 and connect the 1/2 fuel line from the new air dog fuel pump assembly.



I've still have to install the gauges and some other minor clean up.
