Well two morings ago the trusty ol CTD failed me!!!!!

Had it towed to the dealer, they did not pull any codes in the engine computer nor the dodge computer. They then thought it was gelled fuel.

Come to find out that after the mechanidc did some research, he found an ongoing problem with CTD motors 2003 model years.

What he found was a history of the fan clutch shorting out and shuting down the cummins pc with out spitting any codes. Yep it was a shorted out fan clutch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oo.

Hope that microsoft had no programing help on our trucks. :-laf :-laf

ummmmm:::

uhhhh:

ok, someone has to bite at this.

the (cooling fan) fan clutch is a mechanical thermal device isn't it? no electrical involved.

so either you are pointing out the uneducated inept guess from the mechanic or i am missing something major.

what's the real deal?

On our trucks the cooling fan is controlled by the ECM. That's why you will hear the fan at idle usually only with the a/c on.

Some early 03 have wires rubbing on radiator and possibly shorting out or cutting a hole in radiator. Check wire routing in radiator plastic shroud, in lower right (passenger) side corner, as it goes up radiator, to the center of fan. Others have wires rubbing under AC compressor.

I just bought a 04. 5 and while I was looking it over I found the wires that go up to the clutch fan had a sliced in them and the mounting tube was mangeled it looked like it was never instaled properly to begian with. I put some liquid tape on the bare wire. I was suprised to find this device. It has 5 wires, my guess is 2 wires for a fan RPM censer, and the other three would be for fan ingadge and disingadgement of the clutch. They do this to eliminte fan roar. I would rather have the fan roar and lose the electric clutch fan. It's just one more way to cause headaches for a guy who makes his living with his truck. I hate to hear it going bad could stop it from starting and wouldn't send a code either. This is good to know.
