This morning when I fired up the truck it cranked for about 10 seconds before it started. It usually fires right up. I drove to the convience store, shut it off and then tried to restart and nothing. It cranks fast but does not fire. I cranked for about 10-15 seconds, then waited, cranked again, and again, and again. Finally it started and ran fine. I drove it home, shut it off and tried to restart it just to see if it would work and it would not. Any ideas?

Brandon,

You REALLY do need to get a f/p gauge but in the interium try this, lift up the drain lever on the filter housing and then bump the starter but dont start it, this will trigger a 20 some second run on the l/p, if the l/p is working at all than you will be able to pump some fuel into a bucket, now that wont tell you about pressure. You may get some flow but have very low pressure

Sounds like to me you need to visit Cummins and get a new l/p.

cheers, Kevin

can you hear the lift pump running... . turn key but don't crank the motor should run for 2 seconds... or turn the key to engage starter but turn if back of quickly should run for 25-30 seconds... no sound no lift pump... . if you do hear it, you could also just crack one of the banjos loose to see if fuel is being pumped at all

I'll bet since you didn't have a fp gauge that your lift pump has been out for a while and now your vp-44 is gone. My lift pump went out under hard acceleration and I had the gauge so I knew by the pressure being zero and the stumbling/white smoke instead of black. I replaced it about an hour later once I got a new pump from cummins but it was too late it took out the vp-44 also. If it is still under warranty dodge will take care of it other wise if yours is a etc it is about 1400 nad an eth is about 3200.

Whitmore,

I tried what you said and I hear the pump run and fuel does run out. If I turn the key on and off agin about 10 times I can get it to start. It runs fine once it starts. Truck is under warranty and I guess I am headed to the dealer on Monday morning. Should I remove my edge EZ before I go? As to the pump being out a while I don't know. I have only had the truck three weeks.

I would definately remove Edge EZ and boost elbow if you can replace it with the stock elbow. I would also reccomend to replace the stock injectors and remove the 275 if you can but if not the 275's I wouldn't think should be that recognizable.

Problem solved

took the truck to the dealer this am. Lift pump checked ok but the injection pump was shot. Good news is they are fixing it under warranty. Bad news it will be thursday before it is ready. Any ideas why the inj pump gave up the ghost with the lift pump doing ok?
