'97 2500 with 213,000 miles. When you turn the key, it has power, but when the clutch is depressed and the key turned to "run", nothing happens. Doesn't even sound like it's trying to start. Under the hood I noticed that the 40 amp "ignition/run" fuse was blown, so I swapped it out and tried to re start the truck, but it blew the fuse again. Any ideas on what it might be? The starter was a replacement a couple years back, and I've replaced the neutral safety switch when I did the starter. Thanks...

Mines not the same gen, but I'd look at the circuit down to the starter solonoid. If the wiring is Ok, then I'd suspect the solonoid/starter.

Are you any good with an Ohm meter?

Good luck,

Mark

If you can get access to a wiring diagram , look at the components on that circuit , with that multi meter .
Until someone that has more info comes along .

see if you can jump the starter. use a really heavy wire or if you can my favorite a screwdriver and connect the battery lug and the solenoid lug (both on the starter) and see if it cranks or spins. that will show you if the starter is functional or not. Be careful if you have a manual transmission so you don't run yourself over and be forewarned it may throw out some good sparks so wear eye protection and stay away from flammables. ***This is not for the untrained or squeamish*****

The image is summary of the starting system wiring from my 97 FSM (specificly tailored for an automatic). Is it fuse 2 or fuse 3 that is blowing? If it is fuse 2 you might try and pull the engine start motor relay then try and start the truck. If it doesn't blow the fuse then you could have a bad engine start motor relay or a fuel shutdown relay so you could then reinsert the engine start motor relay and pull the fuel shutdown relay and try and start it again. If it blows the fuse then you probably have a bad engine start motor relay if it doesn't then you probably have a bad fuel shutdown relay. If fuse three is blowing but stops when you pull the engine start motor relay then you probably have a bad engine start motor relay if it doesn't then you may have a short in your ignition switch. I am unsure if the diagram is complete as I may have left out any connections to the starter.

By looking at that I would say that if #3 is blowing I would suspect the ing sw. , or something added to it for power [ radio amp ??? ]
If #2 , I would look into the fuel shutoff solenoid .
