Mayday... Dodge 3500, 1998 24vl, 5.9 I just replaced the tappet cover gasket and as you know the injector pump comes out, ecm disconected, ect. After putting it all back together the truck won't fire!!! The codes are P0238 and P1693. The check engine light is on as soon as you turn the key. I know the P0238 is the map sensor voltage high (That sensor we didn't even touch) but P1693 is new and not in the book. I read it was a companion code. Would there be another code not listed???

After the codes we took it all apart again, checked the injector pump key way making sure it wasn't lost, checked all the connectors and put it all back together again. Still the same codes. We did bleed the system and have fuel to the injectors. Again the truck won't even sputter!!!

The truck drove in just fine now a map sensor plus P1693. I did order another sensor but I'm concern that there is more of a problem then that!!

Any one of you guys ever have this problem and have any recommendations. Thanks

Neither of those codes should prevent the engine from starting. How much did you bleed the system out? Provided the VP was installed correctly and all critical components are plugged back in it should fire. Perhaps you need to bleed it more? How many injectors did you bleed?

Check connector to VP44. When I did mine I did not connect correctly and truck would not fire. The lock on the connector is a blade like lock, it can be hard to seat and lock.

I think I may have figured it out the ground wire on the edge is off and the edge connects to the map sensor. I'll find out tomorrow (I'm done for the night and the trucks at the base auto shop> Hope's that is it!!!!

Thanks for the reply

First thanks. Problem is solved and truck is back on the road. Here's an interesting tib bit--- If the ground is off the edge and you try to start her; it will burn out the map sensor. Once I replaced the sensor she started right up. A $122 oops!! A lot of work to replace a tappet gasket (she needed it, leaking all kinds of oil) but it's done: Now I hope the replacement will last another 18 years and 340k miles.

What exactly was the ground wire you didn't have hooked up? I'd wager that was your no start problem. Your truck will start even with a bad MAP sensor, the ECM will just derate fueling.

Either way I'm glad it was an easy fix. The tappet cover is one place I need to address. I don't have any leaks yet but I do some long distance hauls during the summer and don't want to have a "blow out" on the road.

JR--- I have an EDE COMP and there is a 12 vt power that comes to it plus a ground that hooks up on the TPS bracket. I guess that without the ground attached it must do bad things to the map sensor ( the edge data cable hooks into the engine map connector goes through the edge and hooks into the map sensor)

Here's the other funny thing. Today I tested the truck on a long run and when I returned sure enough had another oil leak!! On researching I found the new tappet gasket was good and this leak was were the old lift pump should have been. Years ago Dodge removed the lift pump and stuck the in tank pump. Since then I took all that out and put a FASS pump in. Anyway when dodge took the pump out the never put a cover over the big hole were the first gen pump hooks in. So all these years all that was covering it was gasket paper!!! So I built a plate with gasket mounted it.

Again were back on the road.

Just got my truck back together after replacing the tappet cover gasket. Same issue, check engine light on and just cranks, bled air out of the valve on the pump. Bone stock truck. 98.5 ram 2500 24 valve

Loosen injector lines 123, crank engine until fuel appears. Tighten each as fuel appears, truck should start. When it does it will run REAL rough until it bleeds all air out. As for the check engine light you need to read the codes, use either a code reader or try the key trick. Also check the connection to the VP 44, when I did mine after tappet cover the connection did not go together correct and caused a no start with check engine light.

Úpdate, bled injector lines, rough to start and first few seconds she sound rough, but everything is normal, best part no oil leak.
