My '99 was just flat bedded to a Cummins shop and it needs a VP-44 inj. pump. Their price for a rebuilt is too much ($1581. 00)! Should I go with a rebuilt pump or spend more on a new one and who should I get it from. Please help... I need to make a decision today. :{

Someone suggested this place. Anyone ever hear of them?... cant beat the price.

Hey Challenger, sorry to hear this,

Check with a bosch distributer, should get a better price. got one here in Austin for 1250. 00 for a rebuilt. got a year warranty to boot.

2 yrs and no problem... .

When I bought my pump the person I spoke with who sold both new and rebuilt told me that the new ones were for people who just felt better with new, so the rebuilt was the same as a new. Not sure what this is worth but I figure since the new one was more money you would think they would try to sell them more unless their profit margin is lower on the new vs. the rebuilt. Just what I was told.

I just went to a seminar at the Bosch Distributor here in Denver. We were given a tour of their rebuild operation, quite professional. I think I remember the test station operator saying the rebuilt pumps were built to the same specs as a brand new pump and there should be no difference in performance or life. If you get one from a quality authorized outfit and can save a few bucks on a rebuilt, I see no reason for not going that way. Good luck and check that lift pump. They said that was the #1 reason for failure of the vp44.

Based upon reported VP-44 failures on this board, MOST failures are ELECTRONIC failures - a mechanical VP-44 failure will nearly always cause an IMMEDIATE and permanent loss of engine operation, while electronic problems create erratic and random problems like low power at upper RPM ranges, poor idling, etc...

SO, no matter HOW well a MECHANICAL rebuild is done, unless the ELECTRONICS are also replaced, you only have HALF a rebuild, and future electronics problems MIGHT be just around the corner!

When they "rebuild" a pump do they replace the electronics package?

Could be dependent on "who" did the rebuild.

I think that most people don't truely know what actually happens to their pumps and that some problems are actually mis-diagnosed.

I had the injection pump go out on my 93 at around 120,000 miles, it still ran but not on all cylinders, I could drive it but it was like a V-8 with a couple bad spark plug wires, but sometimes it was almost fine. That pump didn't have any electronics, and it was a rotary pump similar to the VP. I had a local shop rebuild it and they found a broken spring inside. It cost me $500 to essentially replace a 50 cent spring, they did flow test it and turned it up a little too.

So my general statement is that the symptoms you desribe as electronic were they same symptoms I had with my VE pump which isn't electronic.

Back to the subject of this thread, I would be 100% comfortable with a rebuilt VP as long as it was updated to todays specs because the pumps have changed some since your truck was built.

I have a new VP44, the -027 part number for ETC's, still in the sealed Bosch box, from the last German production run (April 2002). I understand all are now made in the Czech republic...

Is it true? and I ask this from what I have read on TDR:

Just because it is a rebuilt VP44 des not mean both the mechanicals and electronics were rebuilt? It could be rebuilt mechanically, but not updated electronics? Or, does it primarily depend on the rebuilder and their reputation?

Obviously a good question to ask if BOTH the mechanical as well as electronics were rebuilt.

I get the impression that the electronics were not necessarily rebuilt / replaced when the pump was mechanically rebuilt.

True?
