I have a 1998 dodge cummins diesel, it idles ok and when the pedal is pushed it boggs bad. ive replace the lifter pump and the throttle position sensor. looks to be the price injector pump. odd thing is it keep coming back to life. so is that truely the problem. ive hered when the injector pump gone it gone. i can turn off the truck pull the key, get out a can still hear the lifter pump, pumping for a short time... and early on before i figure out i needed to replace my lifter pump the transmission shift from overdrive back and forth to drive. but only for about 100 miles ive put 1200 miles on it and then all of a sudden the funny shifting came back for a short time and then the bogging showed up for a while and then would quit not i cant get the bogging to stop unless it at idle but the idle is a little rough... please give me your input... .

The 2nd time the injection pump on mine went, sometimes it would start, sometimes it would not. After trying to push it onto a trailer and trying to push it off the trailer, my buddy turned the key and it fired right up. He was able to get it into a parking space at the dealership for the repair. It would run for a little while, then it would die and not restart. Very tempermental. The first time was just a dead pedal on the highway every now and then.

Good Luck!

Dan

I'm wondering if it could be a plugged fuel screen in the tank. Not sure if the 98's had one or not though. Some have gently blown back with compressed air to clear the screen as a simple test. My BIL's 97 had that problem. (I'm sure you tried changing fuel filter - right?)

Also, any codes or smoke?

yes i replaced the filter whats odd is my lift pump will be running when i leave the truck and the keys in my pocket would that have anything to do with the injector pump if its going bad...

The two codes that you had come up means that your vp44 injection pump has bit the dust.

You can check the code list on the 96 to 01 code list thread at top of page.
