I installed a TruSpeed unit with my second set of 19. 5s years ago. It still works without a lick of trouble. It sets the odometer/speedo very accurately; my odometer is usually within a few tenths of a mile after passing 100 mile markers on the highway.

While you can recalibrate via ODB, it's usually somewhat limited. The TruSpeed lets you dial in the correction with precision and accuracy regardless of how much the tire changes in size.

I was hoping it would be more of a Plug-&-Play Corrector. Like "remove the speed sensor connector on the t-case and plug the Truspeed connector in its place"

I dunno

It's electronic. In the case of your '96, you'd splice it into the line from the sensor. Or you'd splice it in between the CAB and PCM. (Not sure about those old pre-electronic 2nd gens. )

While it isn't plug-n-pray, it does work. And it works far better and has been far more reliable than the Abbott box I had originally.

Been running a truspeed for 200k??, anyways, a long time... one ting, if they still come with that stoopid AGC barrel fuse holder, remove it! You don't need the fuse rattling loose and sending your speedo berserk when the TruSpeed powers down! Straight wire it or replace with a guarded (viz. external) blade fuse holder. Don't ask... i just know

I have been running the True speed for a while as well. It is pretty straight forward. Wire it in and then drive down the road with a handheld GPS and turn the adjuster screw until they are dead on matched. A lot of the other methods don't adjust the odometer to match. The TruSpeed works great.
