I would like to hear from those of you who know from facts the Pro's and Con's to the Cummins with EGR.

I talked with a Detriot Diesel Technical advisor and he said that the EGR will not make any performance difference. For those of you who have facts, please share them for all of us.

Some good information on this covered in the last two issues of the TDR. More complexity. The only upside is for the EPA, and of course the environment. The article indicates that there is a price, from a power standpoint I'm sure that Cummins will change things enough not to affect the HP and Torque ratings. I don't remember specifics since I am not looking for a new truck, I'm sure that other members will add that information. In the mean time check out the last two TDR's.

For me, the cost in complexity is way too much to bear. You're talking about cooled EGR, so you're running engine coolant through the EGR plumbing. Then there's the ridiculous coking of your intake manifold that is almost certain to occur. I also heard that the EGR system raised underhood temperatures so much that most of the plastic components had to be switched to a higher-temp plastic.

Remember what pieces of crap gassers were when EGR first came out? Every car I've owned manufactured before 1990 I disabled the EGR valve. I have every faith that Cummins wouldn't put out a junker, but I question the long-term maintenance requirements on an EGR-equipped engine.

I believe the EGR engines will have HALF the current oil drain interval lengths, meaning TWICE the maintenance costs in oil changes etc. EGR is like a slow cancer, clogging and polluting... no thanks! REmoving the EGR on my TDI was the best thing I did.
