hey guys. right now i have a stock turbo, with a wastegated 16cm housing. a friend of mine gave me a hx40w turbo off of i think it was an 8. 3 chevy or something, it is brand new, he worked at case for some years and aquired it from them :) can i get a turbo housing to fit this turbo to our exhaust manifold? are all hx40's the same and i just need a turbine housing that fits? or do they make a hx40 specifically for our motors? also, i would like to know if anyone else has put on a wastegated turbo and housing on their first gen and if so, how did they run the oil return back into the motor, from the turbo? i just ran some hose, but i dont like how it looks, and i want to say it isnt working out like i wanted and it seems to burn some oil now. i dont know if it is backing up with lack of flow or what, i have yet determined the problem. but, my truck never burned oil before, and it doesnt leak. i am losing some oil somewhere tho, and i can smell it. thanks for any help.

THe HX40 is from the 8. 3L C series, basically a bigger brother to our B series. In stock form they arent very well suited for our lower output and displacement engines. I'm not too sure what the exact problems are, but it has to do with shaft oiling, and breaking the shaft at higher boosts. They are only designed for about 25 psi, but should be good for 30 or so; the HX35 should be good for up to about 30 as well, depending on fuelling and housing set up. I also know that some asemblies work better for the B series than others. The main reason to go with an HX40 is if your EGTs get out of hand, and the HX35 cant handle it. Not to say the 40 isnt a good turbo, it just needs some upgrades to be a god hot rod unit. (though someone with more expertise in this field needs to chime in and correct me). ANd you will need to go to a 4" exhaust all the way- harder to find for first gens, and will require a custom down pipe. I personally woudnt get a HX40 unless you had EGT problems, even if it was at a good price. Too much work for not enough gain, or at least judging by what I've read here.

One more thing I just thought of- your oil could be an injector or timing problem, or the valve seals could be hardened and leaking a little. DOnt just make the turbo the culprit without checking it out first, and eliminating all other possibilities. Or is it burning oil with the HX40? If that's the case, (no pun intended), that could be how your friend came by it. In any case, unless you have POD/ DDIII injectors, and some good pump tweaks, I think the H1C or HX35 should work ok. Where's you get a WG 16 housing for it? OR is that on the HX40?
