This is a description of a TSB for an 07 from another forum...

Issue Description:

Powertrain engineering is requesting air filters from 5. 9L Cummins Diesel engines which are being replaced under warranty to be returned with the engines if possible. The purpose of this request is to assistance with an engineering investigation into piston ring and cylinder bore wear conditions.

Anyone know what this is about?? Sounds like they suspect faulty filters to me...

I kinda skimmed through dealerconnect real quick but I couldn't find anything for the 5. 9/6. 7 if you could get the tsb number or maybe a date that would help

It looks like the Cummins warranty dept want to see what kind of debris the air filter has in it and what kind of shape it is in when they warranty an engine.

I'd say it sounds like they suspect that the air box/filter was changed out with one that doesn't provide adequate protection and that inspecting the air filter would show that it wasn't in place when the engine sustained the damage. Forensics. What I mean is, that if the motor shows ring and cylinder wear commensurate to a specific size of abrasive but the air filter is proven to provide protection to that type of wear, then they would claim that the air filter was not in place when the damage was being incurred.
Bear in mind that I am the suspicious type and prone to conspiracy theories!!

My thoughts exactly... .

The part numbers attached to the tip are all reman engines, so I suspect they are looking for "dusting" caused by aftermarket filters or lack of maintenience.

I have a nieghbor that used to be a dodge diesel tech (now works for a performance shop), and he warned me about aftermarket filters back in 2004 when I bought the truck in my sig. He saw countless issues with dusting caused by the aftermarket filters and systems. In his opinion an aftermarket air filter/sytem is one of the worst mods for a modern (3rd gen & up) CTD, with a high flow muffler replacement being one of the best. Of course this applies to stock or mildly modded CTD's. If you are after high HP and need the airflow for EGT's all bets are off, but you also are already your own warranty station at that point.

This is interesting. I put up a post a while back about my EaA filter leaving a residue in the CBT. I really didn't think it was the filter media, but the seal might be suspect, or it may be just normal. Well, I drained the oil and was going to send it for UOA, but dropped the container and it spilled all over the garage floor. I replaced the EaA with a paper stock element. However, I recently removed the CBT again and there was the same residue in the tube. I had changed the oil just prior to that and replaced the paper filter with a AFE proguard 7 cone drop in filter. I am going to run it for a regular oil change, then send a UOA. The AFE has a good reputation, but if there is a problem, I am would be more concerned about the seal than the filter element. And yes, there are some crappy filters out there.
