Forrest, I like the idea of the # 8 plate. So why not up the ante and go for the #5 plate and make some serious power? Will I still be able to tow without burning this thing to the ground? Correct me if I am wrong, but this should give me over 400hp with this combo. :D :D I will probably never tow over 10,000 lbs with this truck, so I should be able to contol EGTs pretty easy, right, as long as right foot doesn't get to heavy. :D :D My goal is to beat my cousin's 2000 QC 5spd (PM3adj & DD2s) pulling the sled. ;)
 
The correct TST plates for the 215 hp engine, rated HP, and Dynojet HP results are:



#12, 230 hp, 236 hp

#11, 280 hp, 280 hp

#10, 330 hp, 345 hp



All are designed to give some egt control. The larger turbine housing is recommended with the 11 and mandatory with the 10. The HX40 is even better for the 10 and may be needed in some situations/altitudes, etc. If you add the 370 hp injectors, the HX40 is definitely needed with the 10 and possibly with the 11.



Some "advisors" on this list pay virtually no attention to egt issues and often do not have real hp curves from the dyno to compare the different torque plates. I just pulled down a STOCK 215 hp engine and found the head was cracked at the valve seats and from seats to the injector holes. Watch the gauges, keep egt down, or be prepared to pay. Cummins no longer offers bare 12 valve heads and the recon heads are something like $1300 last time I checked.

I missed your post until now :eek: Well, if it follows that the lower the plate # the more the fuel, then the #4 will flow more than the #5. However, the #4 isn't rated, so probably close enough. :)



Here's what I found out about the #8. I ordered my 1st plate, the #12. Put in the plate, centered, WOW, smoke, the rear end squatted down, light front end & be careful passing, those rear bumpers come up real fast. :) EGT measured post turbo was 950 degrees @ 32psi, probably safe.



Then I ordered up the #11. Took off the AFC housing & uh-oh, there was a #8 in there. :eek: I never checked the #, I thought it was a #12. Oh well, so in went the #11, centered. :( Big disappointment. Drove home & slid the #11 all the way forward. Now it was equivalent or maybe a tad better than the #8 centered. EGT the same. That was probably in the 340hp territory.



Sometime later, I moved the probe pre-turbo & hit that 1500 mark in a hurry. :eek: Time for a less restrictive Monica.



The HX40-16 lowered EGT tons. :) Off idle spool up was slow but it made room more fuel. So, in goes the #8 slid 3/4 forward, 1300 max. What, room for more fuel? Here comes the #4.



Bottom line, in my experience, in order to use the #8 or below, you've got to change turbos to relieve restriction, lower the compressed air temp & make the engine work easier. Advancing timing helped, but didn't measure. The BHAF definately reduced EGT & also all but eliminated the off idle spool up.

More fuel isn't always better. I'll tell you from my own truck that one of the best things I have done is put in the gov spring kit,

for pulling a sled w/5 spd you need more RPM & I'll tell ya if you get to big a plate when your pulling your not gonna want to back off you might end up cooking your engine so try the #11 plate

go to a 16cm housing,straight pipe & you'll need a heavier clutch,some good tires & you get'em. The big plates are more suited for short draggin not sled pullin unless you get a bigger turbo & port your head & the list goes on.

If your pulling a trailer you really need to keep the temperature under control. The heat will build up and the power is continuous. I had to slide my plate back about . 020 from stock and that helped some, but I still need to watch the exhaust temperatures because they can get way out of hand especially while towing. There is no way that I can use more than 1/4 throttle with my 13,500 pound trailer on the back. Truth is, I don't need more than 1/4 throttle either. I can pull the Tehachapi's and the grapevine in 5th at 70mph without exhaust problems. But I definately watch the road with one eye and the pyrometer with the other. :eek:
