some questions

Airstream

I'm thinking to just give up farming and retire. What do you guys think the best way to go for an very extended trip is TT or camper? Next question is where should I go? #ad

Bill,

I have both and vote for the TT. It's easy to unhook and leave in a camp ground when you want to do something in your truck. Like go get stuck in the back country.

Illflem, the TT will give you the most Creature Comfort space if you're hold up for a while in your wheels. The Camper will let you get into more rugged areas if you're into more of a four wheel camping adventure. What is it you want to do while you're out and about?

Bill,

I had a VW camper which I took as far west as Texas, as far north as Montreal and northern New Brunswich, Canada. Then I had a "great idea", buy a 23' class C. Bad move IMHO. Too big! Go with a TT or fiver. Drop and run!

If you ever get to the east coast, take Rt 1 north after Portland along the Maine coast. Take the ferry from Bar Haror to Novia Scotia. Come back on land through New Brunswich. Stop by Fundy National Park on the way.

Have to be a TT/5th wheel for me. Anywhere you want ! Be sure to have laptop and keep them postings up 3159 post !!!! You live on this board #ad

Definitly a travel trailer or 5th wheel. Lot's more space, less weight on the truck, your space is reserved when you leave the campground, and you don't have to pack up the camper just to drive into town for milk. The camper is a PITA to load and unload. When it's on the truck, you want it off ... when it's off the truck, you want it on. I could go on...

Bill,

I'd vote for the TT for all of the reasons already listed. I love my 26 footer. Plenty of room for the wife and both kids. It's a "bunkhouse" floor plan. Depending on where you plan to roam, there are length restrictions. (trailer and tow vehicle included, I believe) More to come in the future in places like Glacier and Yellowstone. Something to consider when you go to purchase...

Illflem,Id go with the TT or 5er as well. As far as where to go,If you retire you can go wherever you want. Its surprising how many places there are to see in the North West. I hear Rob Hanson has a huge field next to his house and he will let you camp there as well.

What do you mean, GIVE UP farming? What more can you give up when you farm?? You've been there too d*mn long if you can't figure out where to go on vacation!! That happened to my dad. I retired from farming as soon as I could, at the ripe old age of 18 - right after high school! Anyway, get a 5th wh if possible and enjoy it. TT second. You'll figure out the rest! Craig

If you have never been to the right coast--go. Lots of historical sites and beautiful scenery. I have had camper, TT, and 5th wheel. I suggest the 5er.

LMAO! I have had boats, trailers and 5ers here! I only have 5 acres, but you certainly would be welcome. I'll even run power out to ya.
I have a 10ft Northland camper. It gets crowded sometimes, but I like the ability to haul other toys behind me... like horses, 4 wheelers, etc. We have had it thru Montana, Las Vegas, and up and down the west coast.

I vote for the 5er. Only down side I can think of I can't take my 4 wheeler along. With a tt the bed is still empty. I plan to put a hitch on the 5er to solve this small problem. I have pulled both. 5er gets my vote.

Next question, since everyone prefers the trailer, what are the advantages of a receiver pull vs. 5er? I would like to leave my canopy on for more storage if the advantages of the 5er don't outweigh the receiver.

Bill you must plead the fifth.
Something I wanted to share with y'all that I saw last month. In my water treatment field we all have to take classes for our certificates to remain currant. The instructor has a TT that is specially made. The whole rear end folds down to make a ramp. He then drives his 1800 pound Hybrid honda into the back of the TT and then just closes the ramp. This may or may not be new to the market, but it was the first one I have ever seen. Only problem he has is that he pulls it with a Phord.
P. S... . It ain't "you guys" its "y'all"!!!
Good luck with y'alls TT.

illflem,

Places to go:

Dyno Days
TDR Ralleys
TDR Chapter Events
Thunder in Muncie
etc. etc. etc.

You can do Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Blue Ridge and all the scenery along the way.

Some fun things that you're not to old to do:

River Rafting
Rock Climbing
Horse Back Riding
Cave Exploration
Etc. Etc. Etc.

If you don't mind putting up with a bunch of babies, you can organize a coast-coast tour or something.

Just think of all the fun you've been missing. #ad

I posted the same question about travel trailers vs 5th wheels a few weeks ago and got lots of good advice. Here's the link to the post. Good luck with your retirement. https://www.turbodieselregister.com/ubb//Forum20/HTML/000170.html

Not only all the above, the TT/5er is like a home away from home and you can treat it as such on you income tax return.
As for the receiver for a TT, just one word, "PULLRITE". All the benifits of the 5er; commonly known as an upside-down 5th wheel.

I've owned all three types TT, camper, 5th's and the advantage of a 5ver is how they pull in windy conditions- you don't get the sway or fishtailing that you get with a tt since the pivot point for the 5th is over the rear axle not the bumper of the truck- you have more manuvering room since you can turn a 5th harder than a tt turning almost 90 deg or more hard to do with a TT- think about it can you turn a bumper pull horse trailer as far as a gooseneck livestock or grain trailer??? I've had greatluck with 5vers #ad
on my third one won't go to anything else even if you gave it to me--- good luck #ad

Bill,

I didn't get a 5er because I use my truck to haul a lot of things and didn't want any hitch stuff in the bed. If you are NOT going to want to use the bed for anything else the 5er is the choice. Otherwise it's the TT. I like my TT. It's 32' so we have plenty of room and it tows ok. I don't have any trouble backing it into places, but my dad was a truck driver so I was taught the right way to do this when I was a kid.

I'm leaning towards the TT, so as to leave my canopy on, since the trailer will probably be parked more than towed. Have found many KIT Companions used, are they any good?
