Do you have to leave these tuners (minimaxx, edge, etc. ) hooked up after programing your truck, or can you program the truck then disconnect it and have the truck retain the upgraded power setting?

If you can disconnect the tuner, this would make road site EPA checks easier if they don't see a tuner present.

Thanks

Where do you see road side EPA checks? The closest I've seen is in Texas where there will be a van on a freeway entrance that checks exhaust emissions with some kind of electronic hokus pokus.

I'm not saying they have them now, other than emissions checks, but they will, the less they see the better. I'm more interested if the retune stays there when the programmer/tuner is removed.

thanks

"It is not so much seeing a tuner but the missing smog equip. that gets you into trouble"

Someone could fabricate a system to looks identical to the present system minus the innards and they'd be none the wiser, other than a black tail pipe.

Black tailpipes are caused by soot - the same soot which can be seen by anyone and certainly by a trained DOT inspector.

The era of emission equipment removal without worry is fast fading into the history books. One or more companies who were manufacturing magic black boxes that enabled emissions equipment removal have already been attacked and fined heavily by the runaway EPA. Increasingly stringent state inspections are fast becoming a way of life.

The mini max and the edge have other features that are used after the programming has been entered into the ECM such as gages that can be displayed.
The Smarty is a stand alone programmer once the ECM is programmed you remove the Smarty and this can be stored in the house or somewhere in the truck. That is why I like the Smarty you do not need it until you either return the truck to stock or reload a different program on the ECM. If I want to I can also load a friendly EPA tune on the truck if needed and than return to the ME tune when I want to.

Smarty or H&S XRT Pro will be the programmers to look at for plug and play. You can find a used DPF and Nox filter to punch out to look stock. The 2010+ with H&S programming allows you to keep all EGR stuff plugged in and disabled by the tuning software.

Above was done by a couple buddies with the Smarty Jr, but with Smarty you have to unplug the throttle body valve and EGR Cooler plug connections. Unless your state has capability to read the readiness of the emission at smog testing (Can Bus systems). Your truck will look and sound stock.

jmill, I found in the Mini Maxx instructions, if you disconnect it from the truck it reverts to stock power on 7. 5 and newer, not 06-07 trucks. Also they recommend disconnecting the sensors from the exhaust, it dosen't require you to so I can leave them plug in. As to the EGR valve, they say you have to disconnect the Throttle valve and the EGR Valve is this correct or can they stay connected?

Thanks

Why would you do anything to the power? No matter what you do you will have no warranty, they can see everything you do to these trucks now. Not worth it.

I have 28K combined load and I have plenty of power even with 3:42 gears.

The 4th Gens with H&S tuning you do not need to unplug anything under the hood (EGR components).

I don't need more power, I need better MPG. The EPA is killing the mileage with all the smog stuff.

The money you spend on deletes and a tuner will never be made up with fuel savings. Then when you pop a head gasket you will be your own warranty station!

I have a third gen that is missing some of it's components. The most important part of doing this is to eliminate the raw fuel from entering the engine oil due too the fifth burn of the injection cycle to clean the DPF and the soot that the EGR dumps into the air intake. My engine oil is cleaner and the fuel dilution is under 1% in 5000 miles on my last two oil changes. That alone makes it worth it.

Not everyone will fail a Head gasket on their Cummins by using a tuner. What the end user needs to know that he must use the lower power levels without modifying the engine. If you want to make big power and use the 120+ Horsepower that some tuners will provide than appropriately measure need to be taken such as fire ringing and ARP head studs.

Blowing head gaskets was a thing that was happening a few years ago. The tuner manufacturers have since changed some of their programming and you don't hear of it too frequently anymore.

I ran 23me on my S67 and never had an issue. I also ran it up to 90-120hp over at times without issues.

Now with EFI Live, it's even better.
