i just got done installing my ats aurora plus twins on my 06. the kit uses the factory turbo and a aurora 5000. it took me forever to get these suckers installed but some of that time was do to rain, (no garage currently). the kit has me enlarge the factory turbos wastgate opening to a 1inch diameter and set the turbos wastgate preload to 5/16ths which suposidy
"For optimal performance, set the Wastegate preload to . 312” (5/16”);
exactly 1. 5 turns of the clevis. Thread the clevis out until it slides on the
pin easily, then turn the clevis back 7. 5 turns to set the preload. Too much
preload will cause high EGT's and too little will cause slow throttle
response. Once the preload is correctly set pull the clevis onto the lever
pin. Tighten the lock nut. Secure the clevis on the lever using the original
e-clip. " (ATS Installation manual).
after doing what the installation manual told me, the clevis is now holding the wastgate slightly open. if im not mistaken wouldn't preload imply that its holding the wastgate closed. when looking at the turbo you and see that the clevis is threaded out about . 5 of an inch further then it was at its stock setting. driving the truck it feels good but i feel as if there should be more down low. the turbos dont real kick in until about 1500ish or so and top out at 35psi at WOT. also lots of black smoke down low more than with just the stock turbo. no egt problem, also smarty is set on 4+timing rp=stock tqm=2, no injectors installed. i was thinking about closing the wastgate more and taking the truck for another test drive but it will probably be an hour before it cools enough to touch it. suggestions on how to get turbos to come in sooner would be much appreciated.

i think my suspicions were right i threaded the clevis an additional 3 turns in which now just hold the wastgate closed. and took the truck for a test drive, much better turbos come in around 1200 and max out at 45 now. should i tighten it more or leave it here. i don't want to overspeed the stock turbo.

Are you measuring boost overall or seperate?

It would be good to know how much boost the stock charger is making.

would getting some more gauges help me keep the twins and the motor for that matter healthyer. i have a pyro and and boost (intake manifold), fuel pressure and rail pressure. i am contemplating adding another pyro for the other side of the exhaust manifold (so i will know if an injectors goes bad on me), another boost gauge for between the turbos, oil pressure gauge (because the stock one is fake), and difftemp. iv heard of drive pressure gauges. would 2 of these be useful as it will also let me monitor the effects of my ebrake. but two more gauges would be hard to accommodate. as the a piller is full as well as behind the mirror and steering collum and i dont want anything on the dash.

i would set the stocker at about 22psi and run the aurora at 15 or so but i am not familiar with the aurora either... . give ats a call

I am thinking you might have adjusted the wastegate incorrectly. If you start with the wastegate closed and the clevis just slips over it, then you shorten the rod . 312", that should hold the wastegate closed with a certain amount of "preload". If it is holding the watsegate open, I think that something did not work correctly.
