I have an '01 2500. I recently installed a Bank's PowerPack and exhaust brake. During the install I noted that the compressor/turbine in the turbo has about a 1/16th of an inch play side to side. Is this normal? Also I just read another thread which stated that the buzzing I am hearing on cold weather starts is a power steering pump bypass valve. Is this accurate?

Thank you,

Ian McLeod

Welcome to the board

Yes, the play in the turbo is perfectly normal, as is a little front to back. The pressurized oil creates a cushio for the shaft to ride on while running and needs that play for the oil to surround the shaft.

One startup buzz is the electric lift pump priming the VP44 for startup. Everytime you turn the key to start it will self-prime. Not sure about the PS pump buzz.

By the way, nice to have another Colorado member.

Thank you for the input on the turbo. The buzzing noise is a mechanical noise something akin to a light clattering. It occurs only below 32F

I can't tell what your noise could be but mine has a little noise like that, only when cold, seems like the harder I step on, when in operating temps, it sounds like a buzzing noise too, goes away as the day goes on, something cold. The injection pump probably doesn't like gelled fuel!

I am at 8300 feet also and mine starts right up, like this morning it was only 12 degrees. Buzzing noise was there and went away. Just a cold issue I am thinking.

If it is what I am thinking, it is your PS pump. Check your fluid level and quality. Does the sound change at idle when you push the brakes and/or move the steering wheel slightly (5*)?
