I need some advice from all of you that tow heavy and pull some decent grades.

I am looking to upgrade my power a bit with Don M's Mach 1. 5 injectors and would like to upgrade the turbo at the same time. I am generating alot of heat pulling grades with my 12K fiver and I still have alot of throttle left :(

I know NOTHING about turbos other than mine is to hot... what kind of injector/turbo package could I use to give me a little more power and keep my egt's in check when towing. I am not looking to race anyone over a mountain, just want to be able to do the speed limit and have some reserve to pass the occassional slow trucker.

Your advice is always appreciated

Dave

I went with a hy-brid, larger compressor wheel. More breathing on top end. towing I had to learn to drive the power band change. but after that I had less smoke and picked up around a 1 MPG gain while pulling my 30 FT. 5er toy house. 13K lbs. Can do 65 up grapevine, if no one gets in the way. I do not have injectors like you are going to, but have the drugs to make up for that when needed. :--)

Hey Dave

I have the 1. 5's, Edge Comp and a modified HX35 with a waste-gated 14cm exhaust housing. At 5,000 feet it works well for me. My neighbor who tows 10k+ in the Colorado Mountains tows with a HX40/16cm ex. a little more lag but cooler on the top end than mine by 150 degrees I believe is the rule of thumb. He loves it.

There are several Hybrid turbos out there with HX35 exhaust housings and HX40 size compressor side housings and wheels. They have there following also.

With a 2001 auto you have a 9cm exhaust housing (HY35 that cannot be upgraded with larger exhaust housing) the difference jumping to a HX35/14cm is substantial. At sea level a 14cm would be :) Call around ask a few questions.

A Stock 9cm housing will spool quick, build boost quick but becomes restrictive at high RPMS/loads. Stock truck, no big deal, works well.

Edge box and M 1. 5’s now your flowing much more fuel, producing more power, heat and exhaust pressure. Pressure (and heat) are going to back up behind that small 9cm exhaust housing trying to get out.

A larger 14cm would not spool up as well with a stock truck, but with the M1. 5’s and an Edge box it will do very well. Your real benefit will be loaded at higher RPM’s building boost, evacuating heat and pressure.

Here are a few links to get you started. You will be in the 325-350 rear wheel HP range with the 1. 5’s and edge box. I didn’t notice any transmission upgrades listed. You’ll need it if you don’t already have it done.

Dave, The Mach 1. 5's are on sale this month, go for it! :) I run the Mach 2. 4's with dodgezilla 40/35 and I tow a 10k+ 5er. Its a great combination for me .

The HX 35 with the 14cm housing sounds like the way to go. Thanks for the great explanation Jim. I do have the Suncoast TC and VB on my truck already so I should be good to go for the upgrades. Hey Bob... can you PM me a price on those injectors?

Thanks again guys.

Dave

PS looked at those links and came up with another dumb question... There is a significant price difference between the wategated and non wastegated housings!! What exactly is the purpose behind a wastegate and is it something I will need for my application?

Thanks

How about it guys, anyone care to explain the difference between a non waste gated turbo and a waste gated turbo to a novice. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

TIA

Dave

A wastegated housing on an Hx35 has a little flapper valve that looks like the flaps that open and close on the end of a diesel stack. There is a line running from the compressor housing to an actuator. When the boost gets up to a certain point the actuator pulls the flap open and allows some of the exhaust to bypass the exhaust turbine and go into the exhaust pipe. That keeps your boost from going too high and causing nasty things to happen to your turbo. A non-wastegated housing has none of the above and is cheaper.

I tow all kinds of stuff light and heavy near and far, and I don't have an issue w/ egt's with the stock turbo. I produce 30-32psi at 1700 rpm and have yanked 10,000lbs up the grapevine at 65-70 mph (depending on traffic and johnny law). I really don't feel a turbo upgrade is necessary with my setup, JMHO.

HX35 vrs HY35

Tcolesanti,

You have a HX35/12cm exhaust housing on a 6 speed. Dave has a HY35/9cm.

You bring up a good option for Dave if he could find a takeoff HX35/12cm in the classifieds on TDR or ebay.

Thats exactly what I am planing on doing Jim... trying to find a good used HX35 from a reliable source. I'm usually not to hip on buying used but if I can get it from a fellow TDR member I would probably go for it.

If not, I'll probably just get one from Piers. Just don't want to spend a grand if I don't have to!

I have an hx-35 with a wastegated 14cm housing , got abot 28k miles on it. I doubt that I will need it anymore. PM me if interested.

I've been following this thread, but I guess it is about time to jump in.

Now that I have the transmission mods, I'm ready for the next stage of evolution. I'm just not sure exactly what I need though.

The hyperlink in my signature has all the details about my truck.

I think my next few mods will be GAUGES, maybe a better air cleaner, turbo/exhaust/exhaust brake. I might even consider bigger injectors or a fueling box sometime down the road - if I ever figure out exactly what I want.

My main objective is pulling a 35' toyhauler over the big mountain passes in Colorado and Utah without cooking my motor. Even though I have moved to Tennessee, I still go back west at least a couple of times a year; and we plan to move back to Colorado in 2 or 3 years. I do NOT plan to get into sled pulling, mud bogs or hard core drag racing (though I might make a trip to the track sometime just to see how it runs). I do like to cook ricers. :D

I know, if I ask 10 TDR members for advice on mods, I'll get 10 different answers. Go for it! I'll listen to any advise, then do it my way anyhow.

I really need to get a grip on what I need in the turbo dept, and GAUGES.

Bob & Ron,

Thanks for the info... I am still a little on the fence about some of this and which way I need to go... waiting to hear from my diesel guru to help me clarify a few things.

Thanks again

Dave

Buff & Tim,

Give J. R. Adkins a try, he can build you a turbo for your exact needs. Tell him what your doing with the truck and he'll hook you up with a charger. He is a TDR member, so either PM him or give him a call at 317-281-3130. You won't find a better guy to deal with!

Ron, I sent you a PM in regards to the turbo. I would like to purchase it and will be in your area next Tuesday through Friday. Shoot me a PM if you can.

Thanks, Dave

Sorry about not getting your message untill this morning. My computer was down for a couple of days. I sold it saturday morning.
