Looking for a reasonable upgrade to my turbo, mainly so I can get a little more low end spool, and run 4 inch all the way to the stacks that are coming.

Looking into the HX40, basically a stock (I think) truck, with a 3 inch exhaust now.

The only numbers I can see on the turbo I have are these:

Exhaust Housing: E40 1-129 cast on it,

Intake: BK2300 cast into it.

Any ideas what it is? I'll try to find some more numbers if need be.

I've got the w/g locked open, and it will just touch 32#'s on occasion, 30 is the usual high, but the pyro moves faster than the tach.

Thanks

Brad

I would look at HTT or industrial injection. Both are s300 based chargers, and are way more duarable than an HX40. Plus they will spool better than the 40. Not sure if it will spool better than your stocker though(at least if you don't add more fuel)

THe 40's you see on ebay are very good, ETR diesel sell them but they are directly from HTT. My bro runs one in his 02' ETH with 400 RWHP and it spools fast and hard. The only way an HTB2 would spool faster is if it has the 12cm housing, and the difference is marginal. Everyone is scared of the HX40 because of the very old history it has with shaft breakage. It's thing of the past now the Super 40, PDR 40, and HTT's 40 have all been proven to be very nice turbo's expecially considering the large price difference between it and an HTB2. You can do a his for $900 shipped with downpipe, although they probably won't make that mistake again.

Although you should be running *atleast* 300 RWHP to get a full 40 or else it will be a real dog. But seeing you have a 215 pump, just a 10 plate will get you to that power level.

By the way if you have the wastegate plugged, and you are only getting 32 PSI, and pegging the EGT gauge something is very wrong. I'd say if your truck still has a CAT on it it's clogged, something is a restriction.

Do you have other mods that aren't in your signature? Like fuel mods.

If you do get an eBay HX-40, plan on it not being a PDR (or anyone elses) unit customized for a Dodge. There are a few good 40's on there but there are a lot of bus take offs being sold for what they are not. But if you get one cheap enough (with the right compressor housing to connect to the line to the intercooler) and the right exhaust housing (16 - they are marked inside the exhaust port by the mounting flange), send it to one of the good shops to get it balanced, the wastegate rotated 90 degrees and the compressor housing modded. I did that and saved a ton over the price of a new one.

Are they the super 40's or the regular 40's?? I think even an HTB2 62/14 would out spool a 40/16. I don't think the price difference is that much really. PM me and we can discuss that.

Yes it does. The 40s like 4. 10 gears and fuel. Keep the RPMs up, and it will spool like a stocker. Mine does.

Will be selling my PDR 40 shortly. Have to get the HTT 64/14 turbo on first. Will need to source your own downpipe and clamp. I'm keeping mine.

Doesn't anybody read? The ones on ebay from ETR diesel are from HTT. They are direct bolt on for our trucks (except downpipe of course), and have the 16cm turbine. They are balanced well since they are from HTT.

zstroken I doubt you can get an HTB2 for anywhere near $800, in fact I doubt you could get it under $1100 right?

An HX40 has always been known to be one of the best towing turbo's for about 400 HP trucks, it's what I plan to run.

I can't give him a quote on the public forum but you are right it won't be less than $1100. It will hold up better. Will the 40 survive? Depends on how much he abuses it. Has your brother had an HTB2 on his 02 to compare it with a 40? I can get a 40 from HTT also, but no HX40 will hold up to the abuse that an HTB2 will take. IF your looking for the cheapest route an HTB2 isn't it. Do you want an reasonably priced charger that will take tons of abuse, have great spool? Then the HTB2 is something to look at. I hope that makes sense.

In answer to Matt, I can't say what fuel mods are done, I've only had the truck about 6 weeks, carlot salesman knew nothing about the history.

I DO know, someone had stacks on it at one time, and 2 of the AFC housing bolts are stripped, which would lead me to think "someone" played with this thing. I haven't opened it up yet to see what plate is in there. The exhaust is now 3 inch all the way out with a small muffler just larger than a coffee can. So I'm sure that's a huge factor with my egt's. Part of the reason for a minor upgrade in the turbo also.

I'm also planning on going to 3. 54 gears in the future, I have 4. 10's now and hate it. I don't tow anything, and I'd like to run 80 at a comfortable rpm.

Right now the truck is completely gutless under about 1500-1800 rpm, the turbo won't build under that, all I get is a large cloud of smoke and no go.

I've turned back the star wheel to clear up the smoke, but I was looking for something turbo wise to get a little more low end spooling, and be ok for the next few mods, like injectors, dv's, gsk.

Don't plan on going to far with this one, just want to turn some heads now and again. :D

Thanks for the replies guys, it's good to have people that know what's what, cause I don't.

Brad

On Edit: It does have a 3 piece manifold on it as well, looks similar to the ATS.

Edit: Went out and dug into the AFC, NO PLATE..... Anyone have a stocker they'd like to part with so I can make a 10 out of it??

Would not having a plate be the cause of some of my drivability issues???

I see a bunch of other stuff down inside of it, just not the plate.

Thanks

Brad
