Ok, I'll admit it I really don't know exactly how it could be good from what I have heard but does it really harm anything? My 600 does it alot and now with the edge juice on it I can do it anytime I want. My 02 HO never did it, well at least I never noticed, can anyone please explain it to me, thanks corey :confused: :confused:
 
Turbo bark is caused by a sudden lift from the throttle. The pressure built from turbo boost in the intake manifold has no place to go right away so it goes "backwards" through the system thus spinning the turbo in the opposite direction. That's not a good thing. It can cause the turbo shaft to twist and break. There are systems made to relieve this backpressure when a sudden lift occurs thus avoiding the backward flow of air through the turbo. I wouldn't recommend doing it a lot. Turbos are very durable but repeated barking or backspinning can cause premature failure.
 
My auto will do it when the transmission shifts during strong acceleration onto the interstate or other hard acceleration. It is annoying to hear and obviously concerning with regard to turbo wear. I would be interested in learning about the pressure relief system spoken of previously... hopefully it is not "go spend $1K on a bigger turbo"... Thanks.
 
I had it happen when I put the new turbo on I got from Piers-----------I called Piers and they said to remove silencer ring which I did and it hasnt done it since-----------I guess it worked in my application.

There is an old TSB (97 I recall) that says the bark is normal. Dodge would not offer 100,000 mile warranty if the turbo shaft was going to break if the turbo barked. In fact, I can't recall any recent posts of turbo failure from broken shafts, especially on stock or near stock trucks.
 
The Problem Is...

That I have never heard it when my truck was stock. If I put my TST on 1/1 I cannot get my turbo to bark because my boost pressure doesn't climb as quickly or max out as high. Anything past that setting develops enough of a pressure delta to cause reverse flow and "the bark".



I'm with Forrest Nearing, save for a new turbo and be aware that everytime you suddenly release your throttle under climbing or full boost your limiting the life of your turbo.

When my throttle snaps closed, there is a brief whoosh or whistle sound from the air filter area. What is causing this?



When the engine is loaded, very high turbine speeds are required for the turbo charger to provide intake manifold boost. When the fuel is suddenly cut off, the exhaust volume collapses and the turbocharger rapidly spins down. As the turbine looses speed, it looses it's ability to sustain the manifold pressure and compressed air rushes backward from the manifold and through the turbocharger. The momentary airflow reversal is not harmful and produces the short pSSHTT sound.
 
Every now and then I get a bark if I have a light foot and the truck shifts into overdrive.

Last night I broke a shaft in the turbo. This is my 3rd turbo this year. The 1st one went because I left a towel in the inlet. 2nd one went because the nut backed off the compressor side within 4 days of installation. The 3rd was probably the 45 psi and maybe a series of small barks over time?

Twins next I guess.
 
Pknoerzer, it will do it on a stock truck, it only happened to mine when towing a heavy load, and now that I have the juice I can almost do it anytime. Wow, that is alot of stuff about turbo bark that I didn't know. Thats about what I thought it was doing just not sure. The silencer ring is most likely why I never heard it on my 02, but my new 600 ring is very hard to get out so I just left it in there, I guess I'll have to try and get this one out. :D
 
My turbo makes a noise sometimes when the transmission shifts into OD while under a slight load, as in going up a hill. I was told this noise was from the wastegate relieving pressure do to the rpm drop. Is this "turbo bark"?
 
Im getting 45psi and i dont even have to let off the throtle real quick and she'll huff I think it sounds cool I do it in front of PSD all the time ... . when I was stock I had to power brake up a hill building boost and let off the throtle and brake real quick and itd huff I thought it was the waste gate opening but I was wrong.

My stocker has huffed about 100 times no problems as of yet.



This aint no practice life ..... I have fun when I can.

I have Diesel Dynamics aftermarket turbo they offer for the 3rd Gens not a stock turbo. I just installed my stock one until I figure out what I want to do next.
 
There is a difference between bark and the whooshing sound and the harmful effects. If the turbo is truly barking it is a little more than a release of air pressure. If you take a turbine spinning at 10,000 rpms and suddenly reverse it, it will make a distinct sound that will put chills down your spine. That's a real bark and it can cause real problems. Ask guys that are making hp in the 400 + range what happens to the turbo with continuous barks and they will tell you that the shaft will ring off.

I think you get my point. As light as those things are, they still have mass moving at a phenomenal rate. It's one thing to slow them down with a backdraft. It's another to suddenly spin them backwards and blow air out the filter very rapidly. Then when you throttle, back it goes in the forward direction again. :--)
