I have a 2003 2500 4x4 auto. I have the ramifier, afe intake and 4" stright pipe. I'm starting to get alot of turbo bark. If I go to pass and then let off the turbo barks and shuffter as the boost goes down. Just started to do it more often. Is the turbo going out. Thanks

On the stock turbo, Bark is never good. As far as the turbo going out, I dont think it is accumlative destruction. In other words, One day you will bark it, and bang, there goes the input staft...



Bottom line - Be easy when backing out of the throttle, I really have to TRY to make mine bark, Like when someone pulls out in front of me when I am really accelerating



Heck, if it is doing it everytime you fell off, It could be a broken input shaft that is ready to go, or is partly broke...

I also have alot of turbo bark. :eek: It is very easy for me to do. I always try not to but when I am racing a ferd or something it does happen mainly during gear changes. Mainly 4th to 5th or 5th to 6th. I usually have my juice on 4 and thats when it is very easy to do. However, I have done it on level 2 while towing. It really depends on how fast you let off the throttle. The way I see it if the turbo goes then soon comes twins! :D :D Corey

Are you talking about the compressor shaft, or the transmission input shaft? I wouldn't think that turbo bark would cause a transmission component to fail?



Of course, that's just me not knowing... sitting here in a pool of my own ignorance.



I had to have Dennis Perry adjust my ramifier. It was too aggressive for my set-up. When I'd let off from WOT, the rail would purge it's pressure, causing surging and horrid valve rattle. After a couple of adjustments, it's smooth as glass now.
 
I also have noticed the "bark" from my turbo. Usually my turbo "barks" when I am towing my fifth wheel, 70 mph, and with the cruise set. What happens is (and I'm sure all of you can relate) some idiot will pass me, then cut in front of me, and slow down. I get nervous because this freak has no clue it takes me three times the distance to stop. I worry that in the event of an emergency I will be up his *** . I push cancel on the cruise or tap my brake to cancel the cruise, and the turbo will "bark". Does anyone have any input on a better way to do this to prevent the turbo from "barking"? If a turbo "barks" does it mean the turbo has a problem? I have 25,000 miles on my truck all stock except for the AFE. Should I be taking my truck to the dealer to have the turbo inspected? Could the "bark" be from the AFE?
 
Time doesn't always permit this procedure, BUT... When canceling the Cruise Control, I have found that gently resting my foot on the accelerator just before hitting the cancel button will not allow the pedal to snap back to the "closed" throttle position. I can then gently release the pedal which keeps the turbo from dropping boost too quickly and barking.
 
Barking doesn't mean the turbo has a problem. It is caused by a build up of pressure on the intake. A sudden lift will cause this air to try to find a home since it is not needed in the cylinders. So it takes the path of least resistance and goes back through the turbo. There has been a lot of debate about whether or not a severe enough backflow can cause a backspin. Some are of the opinion that the attempted backspin of the turbo is what breaks the shaft. Bark is normal for sudden lift. I don't like it and try to avoid it.
 
I found that bark is also more noticeable with the open style after market air filters and tubes. The more you hear the whistle the more you will hear the bark as well!!!

What does a bark sound like? I hear rapid deceleration of the turbine on hard acceleration shifts and when letting off at full throttle, but never have I heard air flow back through the turbo. I've been running an AFE for almost 15k miles now.



I know on my shop's PSD you can hear some flutter in the airbox when letting off the throttle quickly. Two or three quick pulses of negative airflow.



Is that the same thing?

i also hear the turbo spool up/down when shifting and that isn't bark. i've only heard my turbo bark maybe 4 times... once with the stock air box and piping [on my first day of owning it before the silencer ring was tossed] and just a few times after. . the turbo seemed to bark real easy with the silencer ring there, and for how hard i drive it now, with the ring not there, i don't hear it??? [connection maybe between bark and silencer ring?]



and if you want to hear it, take your truck out, get up to 3rd gear, one foot on the brakes and one on the throttle... throttle to the floor and load the engine against the brakes. once you are at full boost let off on both feet... you will hear it bark [and it almost does sound like a sick dog making a gasping bark]
