I am experiencing what i think you call turbo bark pretty reqularly. I have an Edge with attitude, 4" exhaust from the down pipe back with magnaflow mufler, and an AFE stage 2 intake. I also have a Suncoast Tripple disk torque converter with a towing shift kit in my 48RE. The transmission shifts pretty hard into lockup. If i build boost up to 25 - 28 lbs. and the lockup shift occurs i hear the turbo make a wiffle sound which a diesel mechanic friend told me was back pressure on the intake side as the turbo was trying to slow down quickly. I can also get the turbo to bark easily if i build up the boost and let off the throttle to quickly even with the Edge on level 0. What can i do to fix this? Is it a big deal? I know it is not good for the turbo. Will a Piers modified turbo help or 4" staight pipe up to the turbo? I am going to bring the truck back to the transmission shop to see if they can smooth out the lockup shift. What else can i do?

Thanks

Seth

I started barking my stock turbo as soon as the Dunrite Triple Disc Torque Converter and Transmission upgrades were done. I had the AFE and Banks exhaust, it would bark when shifting to OD under 2/3 throttle or anytime hard throttle to high boost and let off.

The SPS66 just barks louder now.

Maybe just a fluke, But my Sledpuller NEVER EVER barks due to shifting, etc,etc (no matter of rpm, load, etc)- Though my friend with an 03 barks/surges his "Killer B" turbo alot when he hit lockup

Mine only does it if I lift throttle like when someone pulls in front of me.

I did install the boost elbow that came with the Edge Juice. I talked to a guy at PDR and he told me that changing the turbo won't do anything to prevent turbo bark and just to let off the throttle slowly and also let off the throttle when about to shift into lockup. I don't have a problem rolling on and off the throttle smothly to prevent turbo bark, but i don't like it when doing wide open throttle runs and having to let off around 50 mph so i can shift into lock up without barking the turbo. I am going to bring the truck to the transmission shop next week and get him to smooth out the lockup shift and see if that solves it.

I have talked with my transmission guy and he has talked to a lot of people. Not sure there is a way to really solve all the barking problems except to go back to stock type TC and Transmission setup. I am not going to do that. I have learned to drive normally to keep from barking. But when you gotta get on the throttle on highway sometimes it just is going to have to bark. It also is going to bark at the track on OD shift and sometimes TC lockup. Been told the II SPS66 can take a little barking, sure hope so.

Tomey,

you have a 6 sp. I don't think you'll get it unless you have a tight auto because you can't shift fast enough and lose most of your boost. Anyway thats my theory.

I had a 6spd 04. 5 that didn't bark unless I really tried (build lots of boost then let off the go pedal really fast) and now my ats auto barks quite frequently if I'm not paying attention, especially whlie towing

If you take off the boost elbow and put the stock back on the dogs will bark a little less

I dont think a BOV would solve my problem, at least not on the race track. The one I have looked at from BD seems to work off of throttle position to bleed off boost pressure. That would assume that I let off the throttle. That does not happen with me and the race track.

a biased double check valve could be made to work as a blow off valve on a turbo diesel engine. i don't know if a valve exists that could work, but one wouldn't be all that hard to make with the proper tooling. . the one side would need to be plumbed into exhaust drive pressure, and the other into the manifold boost pressure. once drive pressure drops to say 5psi below boost pressure, it would vent boost pressure more or less to equalize the pressure across the turbo in/out. . i am not sure if i am explaining what i am thinking right. i've doodled up plans for this valve, and it should work well, but would need to be tuned for the specific drive pressure/boost pressure ratios that charger on that specific engine creates

DO A SEARCH bd bov THAT I POSTED LAST WEEK OR SO. For a 6 speed, it is awesome. i think you could set it up to work with the automatic, PM Briad Roth for questions. He was very helpful to me. It works great. I posted pictures as well.

I looked at the BD blow off valve and it is what i am looking for except it needs to be modified to also blow off when the transmission shifts. It is electronicaly controled so there must be a way to make it work. Anyone have any ideas as to how to modify it to monitor the transmission signals and blow off when the transmission shifts. This would eliminate all my turbo bark.
