Bark it and break it!

Live with it and die with it :D

As Mark Chapple said a few years ago, "yep, it's normal, and yep, it'll break 'em. "

The noise is from the compressed air in the pipes and intercooler trying to force the turbo compressor wheel backwards when the driving force suddenly stops (turbine side) pushing.

Remove the silencer ring and see if it gets better. If so then decide if you can live with the added turbo whine. If not then you can customize your silencer ring, like I did just yesterday. I worked much better now. I am gonna try a few more customizations some evening this week.

I have the ring out already, It is worse since I put the #4 plate in rather than the #8 I might have to back off on the set screw in the boost elbow a little. Its making me a little nervous. OBTW Thanks for the replies.

Something I only recently learned. The turbo has a groove in it by the compressor blades. This is supposed to allow the pressurized air to flow down thru the groove and back into the intake, via the vents that the "silencer ring" is blocking.

The addition of the AFE Mega Cannon made the barking worse. Apparently now the turbo has an even easier time of getting plenty of air to bark with.

Removing the silencer ring made a big difference in bark. Reduced it to none, for me. Hence my suggestion above.

Anyways the combo of removing the silencer ring and the Mega Cannon, make the truck sound like a 747 powering up at the airport. No bark but lots of whine and noise.

So just yesterday I took the silencer ring and a round file and put 12 - 1/8" deep notches in the ring. Such that the ring is mostly there, but can still allow some venting of the air. This seems to be working, best I can tell so far. Barking is down, and the noise is only slightly louder that before. I am gonna take and enlarge them a little more some evening this week and see how it does. So far I like the custom silencer ring idea.
