I AM STRANDED IN TWIN FALLS ID. I WAS PULLING A LITE GRADE WHEN THE TURBO STARTED WHINNING/GRINDING AND EXHAUST GAS TEMP WENT OFF THE SCALE. ALL HOSES AND BOOTS ARE IN PLACE. BUT GRINDING SOUND CONTINUES. SPEED IS LIMITED TO 50MPH WITH VERY HIGH TYRO TEMPS. CUMMINS HERE WANTS 600 PLUS LABOR AND MAY BE TUESDAY BEFORE DONE. CAN JUST BEARINGS BE REPLACED. SUPPOSED TO BE IN KENTUCKY WED. NITE.

ANY IDEAS?

To replace the bearings, it will have to be completely disassembled. IF that's all that wrong, you might be able to have it rebuilt cheaper, but that takes time. $600 for a stock replacement turbo isn't bad. If you get to keep your stock one, you could have it rebuilt and sell it, or have a spare.

If you can limp to the SLC, UT area, I could put you in touch with someone who will have a stock turbo in stock and could likely have it on Monday for you too. Only takes about an hour or so.

Call me Monday morning at 800-628-8111 if you don't get it resolved.

Thanks for the response and to the TDR travel companion in Twin Falls, ID for chatting.

I had Cummins in Twin look at it and they said that the turbo was ok and that the lowest boost air tubing boot on the driver side had blown off. They couldn't get the boot to stay on no matter how tight they made the clamp. Thought is that it was so oil-soaked from the KDP that it was deteriorated. I have had the next boot up blow off and it didn't sound anything like this. I would swear this was bearings. Kinda like marbles in a blender. They got a new boot from Dodge and put it all back together and it sounds and operates fine 2500 miles later. $325 spent is better than the previous price quoted.

Thanks again, all.
