Does anyone know what the recommended break-in procedure is for the Pdr Bht3b turbo. Also I normally hold the nut on the end of the shaft with my fingers till oil pressure comes up on a new turbo. I'm a little hesitant to try it on this one. Seems like it should be easier to hold.

normally when installing a new turbo it is recommended to add oil into the inlet and spin the wheel by hand then install the oil supply and fire it up.

thats just common install procedure

Yep.

While breaking it in, keep the boost down. Don't try to peg the boost gauge.

Yep.

I do that also. I'm planning on around 200 miles of break-in. Keeping foot out of it is no problem. Reason I asked is Pius at Bell turbo prefers the "tick off your son in law and then loan him your truck" approach on the one I got from him and others prefer a more subtle approach to theirs. Just thought I'd ask.

Ron, care to elaborate on that?

Bob.

When I bought a Bell USB I asked how I should break it in. His exact words were "P*** of your son in law and then loan him your truck". He preferred that it ran it hard from the start. Not how I would normally do it but I don't argue with the guy who makes the product. On the Dodgezilla I was told to Idle it for a short time then go out and drive conservatively for about 50 miles or so. Then gradually start taking boost a little higher. Pretty normal stuff. So procedures do seem to vary from one turbo to the the next. Hence the question on break-in.

Everything kinda showed up at once. I'm going to start on it tomorrow. I should have the twins and new head installed by the end of next week. Wife wants me to make the trip to get away from the shop. So I'll most likely be ready in time.

Did I read this right:eek:  Say it ain't so... .

I am trying to become a professional thumb wrestler. Now that it's been turned down at the Olympics I think I'll go pro.

No, I don't actually do that. Someone on Tdr told me to do that on a turbo I bought. So I did. Yes you can hold it at idle but it's best to not play with such things. Adding oil and then gently spinning by hand is a nice safe way to pre-lube the turbo.

Kind of like holding on to the blades of a blender while you try to fish out your wedding ring.

Sounds great RonA I cant wait to see that pickup. Its everything that I could ever want in a pickup. Do you want to sell it when you get finished.

No I'm hoping to hang on to this one for a while. I'd take a major beating if I sold it. Spent way too much on the drive line. I want to get it painted when I'm done. I'm hoping to have some fun with all these ford guys around here. The only thing left will be a clutch. Haven't decided what to do there. My peak torque right now is about 1030. If the twins take it much higher I might have to go to a double disc. Hate to throw another 2k into this. Con OFE only has 5k on it.

I just install mine and go. My turbo builder uses Lucas Oil Stabilizer as assembly lube. keeps the bearings lubed long enough for oil to reach them, and you're in business.

Well I would take that clutch off your hands, but it wont fit my getbag. I will be getting a clutch sometime in the near future, still not sure which one, but I am hoping that mine lasts until we get back from the first gen party. I'm crossing my fingers.

Actually it's easy to hold and works very well as long as the person starting the truck keeps their foot off the pedal. Hard to do with one person though , arms are too short to reach the key and I can't spin the alternator pully fast enough with one hand to start it.

Never tried the blender trick. Were you able to get your ring back?

Was not an actual event, that is just the picture that came to mind. Kind of like that Ace Hardware commercial with the guy with his hand in the disposal when the wife comes in to look at the new ceiling fan in the kitchen.
