I need some help concerning which turbo to get.

You can see by my signature how I'm set up. I don't do any racing, (except to blow off a PSD or two:D ) just pull a 9500 lb. camptrailer quite often. I have plenty of power but my problem is high etg. 's when pulling a steep grade and then I can't use all that power!

I've been told I need a bigger turbo, but there are too many options and I'm having trouble deciding which to get without breaking the bank!

Kurt hx-40 12 cm2

Piers modified hx-35

Piers modified hx-40

Just a stock hx-40

And then 3-4 different exhaust housings for each!

I'm sure if I could just lower the egt's by 150 - 200 deg. I would be in fat city...

Thanks for any ideas,

Lonnie

I'd go with Piers' modified HX-35 with a 14cm housing... maybe even a 16 if you like higher rpm's.....

(1)Quick spool... .

(2)Lower EGT's... .

(3)Piers is the man.....

(4)It ISN'T an HX-40.....

(5)It will support upwards of 350hp... . when you get the BOMBing bug.

(6)Piers is the man..... already said that, but it's worth mentioning again.

Just the stock HX40 will get you more than 200 degrees, no problemo. :) It did for me, hands down.

I don't know what equivalent plate you have to TST, but if you plan on going larger, you want to take that into consideration before you choose a turbo. Piers has 2 HX40 versions, 16 & 18cm. I'll bet you'd be happy going straight to the HX40 with the 16, which would be better than the stock HX40. There are trick technology advances in Piers stuff. :D

LRamey,

I have run the 35's and 40's in different configs.

Kwikkurt HX40/12= Super fast spool-up and just plain fun to drive. The low end torque was really good with this turbo. Downside to it was the pinwheel speed and drive pressures are kinda extreme for the small shaft the 40 has. The smaller housing size can be restrictive for some engine set-ups i. e. big HP.

Stock HX35 with 16 housing=The 16 housing is cheap to buy and works pretty good to lower EGT's. I completely wrung one out for about 30,000 miles. The little thing held in there, but is now needing a rebuild. I ran it at 38psi daily.

Piers modified HX35= I have no personal experience with this turbo, but a few guys here have changed their 40's out for this turbo to deal with the low-end lag problems with the 40's. Piers only likes them on the 375hp and below trucks, but some guys are way over this figure with it. It has a larger compressor wheel than the stock 35's do.

Piers modified HX40= I currently have this turbo on my truck. He has done some modifications to the turbo to help with low end lag and lots of poeple are saying the lag is no worse than the 35/16 set-up. I have an 18 stock and 16 modified housings. I cant tell you about the 16 housing yet, I still have the 18 on. The lag with the big 18 is not for everyone. Auto trans guys might not like it at all when towing. I like it on the big end, but the lag is more than any turbo so far I have used on the little end. I have riden in trucks with the 16 housing and they do not suffer from the lag like the 18's do. I will put my 16 housing on real soon and see what happens. Since it is modified to spool faster and a smaller housing size I expect this to be the combo I keep for awile. Dee Rawson has the Piers modified HX40 and reports his lag is only 50 rpm worse than the 35. That is really good and when the turbo comes on he can really feel it.

Stock Hx40's= Many guys have been running them for years and have had good luck. Cord Reynolds is running a HX40/16 stock turbo and it is giving him no problems. He got his from Joe Donnelly. Cords truck recently slaughtered everyone at a dyno event with over 450 HP.

There was a bad batch of 40's from Holset , but that has been figured out and fixed. Diesel Dynamics has yet to loose a stock HX40 turbo.

Pier's SUPER HX-40

As Don said I have this Super turbo with the 16 housing on it. It spools up great and has dropped my EGTs towing approx. 250 deg over the HX-35/16 combo. it starts building boost at 1400 RPMs and after it starts it's off to the races. It builds boost alot faster:eek: . My empty milage is up 3/4 MPG:D

It has been fun but there is two down sides to it...

1) My BFG MT/KMs on the rear don't like it, even on dry roads they break loose easily.

2) It time for an exhaust brake. I go down the same hill every morning to work and with the old turbo it would hold 62 MPH on this hill in 5th, now it runs away:eek:

Pier's has got a great product here with this turbo!!!!!!!!

Thanks guy's,

I spoke with Piers today and he said his 35 won't help me with my egt's on the top end (basically confirming what eveyone has said so far. )

He did tell me to back off on my cam plate a little (it's all the way forward now) and that should help. Otherwise it's looks like it's the 16cm2-40 for me.

Thanks for all your help!

Lonnie

So far I'm very impressed with the durability of my "stock" 40/16. It has been building 42-45 psi for the last 6 months and 48 psi for the last 3 weeks:eek: . It worries me a little to run at 48psi, however it has held up so far (3 weeks:rolleyes: !!). I can't honestly say that I saw as much reduction as drawson. I'm able to peg my 1500 deg guage in 4th gear!! I haven't had the privelage to test any other turbo's (Don's a little better at blowing em' up:D ).

-Cord

Cord.....I have some bad news!

Don't mean to bust your bubble but your guage pegs in 3rd... . or it did on our ride..... LOL, Take Care

Jim

You're right Jim. I have the habbit of calling 3rd gear 4th and O. D. 5th. It's not for the faint of heart to see the guage peg when you still have one more gear to go. I just avoid looking at the guage when I shift to 5th (O. D. ), then at 115mph I'll count how long it takes the guage drop from the pegged position:D

cumminsgetme,

Do you have a waste gate on that thing? If so can't you adjust it so the boost doesn't go so high?

Forgive me, I'm a little dense on some of these things.

cumminsgetme,

We're in the same boat. Go like crazy to 1500 degrees & then have to back off. I'm thinking the next step is Piers HX40-18 tricked out version or the B-1.

Any thoughts?

the B1 is MY weapon of choice. . Ordered it today:D:D:D:D

but its $1500+ I can't wat... .

Seriously, the entire puposse of the B1 is to make over 400 TOWING horsepower. KwikKurt makes 425 rwhp w/o needing to look at the EGTs. That's what sold me.

LRamey-

Yes, it's a waste gated 16 housing. 45 psi is where I choose to run it. I know I'm pushing the limits, but that's what bombing is about!!

Forrest-

You back off???:D , ... that's no fun!!

Ok to clarify some here. My reduction in EGTs was measured two week before and after this Pier's super turbo towing my brother inlaws back hoe up the same canyon at the same speed. Here is the data...

This canyon is a windy 5 1/2% grade. running at 60-65 because of the turns with the old turbo (35/16) is would be seeing 1150 deg at the top of the canyon. with this new Super turbo I was just under 900 deg.

cumminsgetme, My EGT gauge barries easily in 3rd, 4th, and 5th with anything over 3/4 throttle. If the temps wheren't this high we wouldn't be making the horse power we are. These trucks are sure alot of fun. Who would ever think you could get 400+ HP and still get 18+ MPG:D  :D
