Turbo Cool Down Question

Guys,

My new turbo comes w/instructions to never shut down above 300° I have the probe pre turbo and don't see 300° Gots the PDR 35 w/40 wheel and 16cm housing, POD's etc. etc. etc. yadda yadda



The wife thinks I'm nuts and, well, when I pull the rig in at the parents or in-laws they wanna know why I let the engine idle for such a long time. And no I'm not turning the fuel down



Would porting really help that much? Say the intake horn and maybe the cyl. head too????



Oh ya... ... . my rig smokes at idle... ... ... like a Norfolk & Western "J" Class locomotive

Scott how long we talking for cooldown? How long after a long 55mph+ trip empty does it take to cool down? How long for a city stop and go trip empty does it take to cool? My setup, the highway trip, I need about two minutes to cool, city stop and go, about 45 sec to a minute. With a stick, that last hundred yards or so, I can run in a lower gear with higher rpm to run air through that exhaust manifold to help cool it and seems like my cooldown times are shorter. As compared to hammer down to the house and then have to wait forever, tick the neighbors off at 4 am when I get off work.

Something I discovered by chance..... if you have any accessories on, such as the heater or AC for example, it takes forever to drop to/below 300*F on cool down. I don't know if this applies to your situation but it's just a thought.....

yup, I always turn the AC compressor off as I'm nearing my destination, and I try to be able to coast in gear for a little distance, as that REALLY brings the EGT's down quick...

Make sure if you've got an Auto transmission that it's in neautral or park, mine won't ever cool down in gear. Ditto what's been said about AC, shut it off.



Or get an Isspro Turbo Temp Monitor then you can just walk away from your truck as it's cooling down, it's the neatest gadget that I've bought for my truck, no worries about shutting down to soon. I have a second thermo couple installed post turbo for the monitor, it works great.

The last two miles of my trip I drive posey picking presus so that i can idle for 30 seconds and shut off.

Wow. I can idle up the driveway after going 40-45 on the gravel on 4th (500-600 EGT), and be down well below 300 by the time I get to the house. As in 200-250 deg. Try a timing advance? Turning the A/C off as you get to where you're going? And do the inlaws' opinions REALLY count? I know mine didnt before I got rid of them. (no, not in THAT way, though I thought of it a time or two )

No, don't want to change In-Laws



I have been shutting off the ac early, and sometime, put the trans in "N" to coast in to a parking space at Sears/Wally Mart etc. I have found recently, that if I down-shift into "2" the engine isn't as warm when I drive trough a parking lot/local park etc. Seems to help some. She will run faster, but gets more air I suppose.



I'm shutting her off about 350° or so... ... ... ...

If you're still at stock timing, I'd bump it up a bit. Just for fun you might also check your oil cooler and make sure it's not all crudded up.



With my '92, I'd idle for only about ten or fifteen seconds before my gauge dropped below 300. That's empty, on a 70 deg. F day, doing about 20 mph up a very slight grade for about 1/4 mile.

I have a steep driveway about 125 yards long. Temp goes to just about 400deg then I do a slow sharp 180 and park it. By that time it's down to 300. In 10 seconds it's at 250 and I shut it down. It Idles at about 200deg (pre-turbo).

Have you considered turning the numbers on the gauge face?

Yah, kinda like a dial guage? If you don't like the reading..... just turn the face
