Has anyone here put the 12cm2 wastegated exhaust housing from a '94+ on thier 1st gen ram? If so, how did it do?

I'm going to be facing one of these in the teeth shortly, and was wondering if anyone's seen one or done it.

Hey Power Wagon!

I have also been pondering the same thoughts! I'm relatively new to the Cummins Turbo Diesel scene and chocked full of questions (Not many answers here yet!). I have also been poking around in the 1994-1998 12V forum looking for additional info and taking notes. It must be alright, I see other first gen'ers over there all the time. I just hope I don't receive the dreaded "Horsepower Penalty" for crossdressing!

I'm sure this isn't new news, but the highly respected Ted Jannetty @ JRE (www.jannettyracing.com) has been recommending the 12cm2 wastegated housing for the "P" pump gang in the other forum. If I were a betting man, I would put my money on him being able to provide some insight!

When I spoke with him the other day about injector pumps & Injectors, it was mentioned that I'm running the 14cm2 wastegated housing from the Banks kit. I mentioned that so far I have been disappointed in this housing and wished I would have went the 16cm2 route. He said he prefers the 14cm's & 12cm's over the 16cm's.

Wouldn't it be great if we could have a 12cm VS 14cm VS 16cm debate. I sure this has been visited before but as I mentioned I'm new to all this and haven't seen this debate come up in reruns.

Well, we'll see what people say... I'm sure I'm going to see this in the shop sooner or later. Anyway, when he's got it together, I'm going to ask him to let me drive it, and I'll give you my impression. Also, he's installing a BD 3. 5 inch exhaust, an NVG4500 and eventually some HO injectors and I'll see the pump for some tuning and tweaking as well. I'll post my observations after each stage, if I get hands-on time with it.

The 93's aren't quite so bad, but the 91 and 92 trucks seemed to be terrible, due to the turbo issues. Since his is a '91, I'm hoping we're going to make a serious difference in his truck's performance.

All the same rules apply, the exhaust turbine housing determines turbine shaft speed vs. rpm on a given engine.
Higher turbine shaft speed means more boost.
It is true that the 12cm2 housing is the best ! It will give the best response and make the engine be able to burn more fuel at lower rpms without smoke and therefore make more Torque.
The only reasons we recommend the 16cm2 housing is because of ease of install, price, and it's far better than the 18. 5cm2 or 21. 5cm2.
We have installed 12cm2 housings on early 12 valve rams with very impressive results.
It requires that you cut 1. 25 inches out of the front pipe and weld it back together, most people can't or don't want to handle this, and the price for a 12cm2 housing with a wastegate can reach 450. 00.
Mabey you can call Joe Donnelly, he probably has a pile of them since he so strongly recommends against them to all the second gen. guys. LOL

This guy got one from somebody for cheap. I don't know where or who, but he also got an NVG4500 and other misc parts - all cheap. This housing came without the adapter plate on the back, and we didn't have one - except for one off an ISB. I think he was going to try to get one from Cummins. He's had his truck apart for nearly a month, while he changed from the Getrag to NVG, and other miscellaneous things. He's in such a hurry to get it going again he may kludge the thing together, just so he can drive it again.

Anyway, he'll be in in a couple of months for injectors, and then for tweaking his pump. Should make a pretty strong running truck.

hehehehe. Don't laugh, Ted. I have a bunch of old ones and two new 12 cm2 wastegated housings (taken off even before starting up the truck). When I trip over them too much, I throw some away. #ad

Anyone who wants to cram his exhaust through a 1. 5" diameter pipe let me know (that is what 12 cm2 converts to!

Different opinions. You are entitled. . . actually the 12 isn't bad for some 1st gen trucks with modest fueling, but being 1. 25" longer than the 16, 18. 5 and 21 cm2 housings, the installation is more difficult as Ted outlined.

Joe.
That's interesting about the 12cm2 turbo relating to a 1. 5 pipe. I was just wondering what the 16,18,&21 housings relate to?
Thanks
