During the process of installing a BHAF with the intake hose off the turbo, I noticed a ring of oil where the blades nearly make contact with the intake housing - - they may be making contact as when I stuck my finger in-between a couple of the blades and rotated the turbine to get a "feel" for the oil (it was thick and tar-like) I sliced my finger open :{ on a razor sharp ridge in-line with the blades. This does not give me a good feeling. It wasn't like that 2300 miles ago during my last oil change (I always take the hose off and inspect the turbo).

Truck's got 70,000 miles on it. If lift pumps are covered by the diesel warranty (gone through one of them), Throttle Position Sensors too (gone through one of them), I'm thinking the turbo will be covered as well (Guys: please tell me I'm right).

Any thoughts on whether the rig is safe to drive or not? I'm supposed to be going out of town on Tuesday, but might be able to get it to the dealer on Monday.

Thanks,

Jon

Ridge from rubbing

If there is a noticable ridge where the compressor blades have been touching, then the turbo is toast.

Make sure you put the stock factory air filter back on before you take it to the dealer, otherwise the dealer may use the BHAF as an excuse to void your warantee.

Do you let your truck idle and the EGT's cool down before you shut off the engine??

Greg,

Even before I got my Autometer gauge set I let the engine idle before shutdown. With the gauges (which I've had for the last two years) I let the EGT's come down to 300 post turbo before I shut it down.

Are you kidding that I'm going to have to put the factory box back on? It's a Fleetguard filter for crying out loud! The engine is stock, save the BD brake, red valve cover, and now the Fleetguard BHAF... ... . and it was putting the BHAF on (after removing the stock box) I discovered the oil ring and then the ridges (actually two... one parallel to the point of the front of the blades, and one at the point of the rear of the blades... . no scoring in the middle).

Anyway, if anyone has some experience with how the dealer is going to react on a warranty claim with a Fleetguard BHAF that fits perfectly onto the stock intake hose, please share.

Thanks,

Jon

Unfortunately, warrenty on modified trucks very much depends on your dealer's attitude. Swappping your factory filter back in reduces the potential for dispute. If this is not an option then you will just have to take your chances.

hey big jon,my dealer is pretty good about replacing things under warrenty. i have a hy and it is leaking oil into the turbo and the said it has to be out so much before they would replace it,mine was not out of spec yet,but still leaking oil, gofigure. i was trying to get a new one and then put it on shelf since i have one of jrs turbos, but to answer your q,yes the turbo is warrenty is under the cummins 5 yr 100000 mile warrenty.
