Hey Guys

I had the oil & filter changed last week, The mechanic said there was a little up & down play in the turbo fan blade, Not much he said but a little. My truck now has a little over 16000 miles. My question is, Is this normal or do I need to take it in to my Dodge dealer ?. :( The mechanic is a old friend, and some things I let him do, And some things I don't. Know what I mean.

Thanks:D

I think they are to have some play in them. Mine has 6,000 miles on it and there is some play in the shaft.

A little side play is normal as long as there is no way its close to rubbing the housing, there should be no end play that you can feel. I had this question some time ago and this seemed to be the answer I recieved from those in the know.

My '91 has so little play it's difficult to notice - the same as when new - is yours back-and-forth, or front-to-back? I could understand a SMALL amount FtB, but StS could indicate bushing wear - something to keep a close eye on...

The turbo shaft is actually riding in a thin layer of oil between it and the bearing. When you move the shaft side to side you are forcing out that oil. You'll probably notice that when you first start to move the shaft it's stiffer than after you move it side to side a couple of times. A little amount of movement is nothing to worry about.

Well said Powder Extreme. That is absolutley correct. There will always be a little play in the shaft to allow for the oil "wedge". The play should not be exxcessive to the point that the turbine could be out of balance or where the there could be oil leakage problems. The play should mostly be around the radius and not side to side.

Directly from the Cummins book:

Axial play (end) . 001"- . 003"

*Axial play measured with dial indicator

Radial clearance (compressor housing to impeller) . 012"- . 018"

*Radial clearance is measured with a feeler gauge.

With so few miles on it one would doubt anything is worn, pull the inlet hose off the turbo and GENTLY spin the impeller, if it spins freely... . relax and drive it. The dealer will give you 9 problems when you gave them NONE.
