What to do for more power

Hey can someone help me with some basic data on teh different turbo's. For example on my 2001, auto - which one would I have? Which one would be recommended to change to, and for what reasons? I don't plan on ever running propane but will be making the jump to DDT transmission upgrades, and injectors.

HY 9cm

At least that is what I think you probably have with the auto. How big of injectors and then if you are just going to play or really work the truck (12,000 lb trailer towing) will tell those in the know what to advise you for sizing of the replacement. There are a lot of HX35's that have been taken off laying around. Piers has a nice upgrade for the mid range bomber right now. Good luck.

The 2001 Auto uses the HY35 Turbo. Smaller, faster spooling, less easy to bomb. The HY spools a little faster than the stock HX35 found on all the manual shift trucks to help compensate for the 1600 RPM stall speed of the stock torque converter. The HY35 has a fixed hard line to the waste gate and is not easily modified short of crimping the line. The waste gate bleeds off excess turbo boost pressure. Mine tops out at about 20PSI stock. About the only way I know of to modify a HY35 boost to get more out of it is by using a turnbuckle to hold it partially or fully closed depending on how much boost you want. Search for "turnbuckle. " However, more boost on a stock truck without a fueling box is illadvised as it will create an over boost condition, light your "Check Engine" light, and set an error code.

The HX35 is a little bigger and a tad beefier and has a flexable wastegate line that is easily modified. There are boost elbows and other methods of controling how far the wastegate opens by blocking the pressure to the wastegate to open th valve. Same reasons apply to not boost without a fueling box. On both, a box takes that error signal and clamps it to a lower voltage level so the computer won't see it.

There are different sizes of turbo housings out there to do different things with volume and lag. I can't discuss those as I've reached the limit of what I think I know about turbos. There are many out there who are way smarter on turbos than I. Beauty is: I didn't know anything about them until I bought my truck. My truck has made me smarter already!:D:D:D

The jargon above may not be technically 100% exact, but I think pretty close to give you an idea to get started. Dig into the TDR. There's a lot of great people here with outstanding tips, tricks, and technical know-how to guide you along.

Hope this helps! BF

There may be a misnomer about turbo size and horsepower. I just ran 350 rwhp, 771 ft lbs with an HY35, DD2's and an Edge Comp.

I believe Piers sells a kit for the hardline wastegate, or you can go the turnbuckle route.

Larger turbos are needed to keep egt's in check and for real big power trucks... ... ... ... above 350 hp.

Yes your 2001 auto has an HY35, 9 cm

Thanks

Batman - what have you done to your transmission - I mean have you put a DDT valve body and/or torque converter in yet?
