Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Turbo going bad???

I have been noticing over the past few weeks my turbo whistle (no silencer ring)

Has had a strange ticking or churping

sound above 20 psi and when it does it I only get 25psi boost. When it sounds normal the boost goes to 29psi. I took the air inlet off today, since it was making the noise almost every time it spooled up, and found that I was able to move the blade shaft up and down and side to side in the housing:--) Not Good I know for something turnig that fast. Is there any such thing as replacing the bearings in the turbo or should I find a replacement?

Anyone have a good used HX35W cheap??

The turbo fan does have some wiggle room when its not running. I can move mine up-down... right-left. Not much but it does move. When you start up the engine, the oil fills in this space on the bearing surface and your turbo shaft spins on a layer (film) of engine oil... no real contact with the bearing so to speak. If your shaft was hitting or the blades were hitting it would probably result in immediate and severe turbo damage.



You can get the turbo rebuilt or buy new. Perhaps it is your turbo but it could be something else... maybe a loose intercooler boot or ???.

You should not have any problems buying a low mileage used HX35. Another option would be to send to Piers (www.piersdiesel.com) and let him rebuild it.
