Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) turbo growl

Hi all, what causes turbo growl? My truck started this last year only when towing the 5th wheel and when letting off the fuel pedal. Is it time for a new turbo? The noise as happened only five or six times, how do you check for play/wear on your turbo, Thank's Don

Do you mean turbo bark? If you let off to quickly at high boost your turbo stalls and makes a trrrible thwack that you can feel in the floor. It is basically going from 150,000RPM to 0 in a second of so. It's quite tough on the shaft but you don't hear to many turbo's blowing up from that. Try letting off the throttle a bit slower, that should stop it.
