While doing a little preventive maintenance on my 03 tonight I saw this. I don't figure that, that's a very good sign. Truck has about 250k on turbo most pulling trailer. I don't know where to start. Do I pull this one of and send it somewhere, or do I look for a replacement. If so do I go new or reman. As far as going with none oem I am not opposed to it just not sure if I can do that with pac brake and exsisting downpipe.

I do run the truck with a smarty on it don't really have any egt problems.

Also please give me some ballpark prices to expect when looking.

Also any pointers for removal I seem to remember something about it being hard to get the bolts loose from the manifold.

Thanks

I am sure that it can be rebuilt with a genuine Holeset rebuild kit (buy it from a reputable distributor like Diesel Power Products as opposed to someon on ebay) That beign said, if you want a little more kick in the seat of your pants, you COULD choose to upgrade to a different turbo.

Definitely upgrade if you have to go to all that trouble. I have the BD Super B on my signature truck along with their manifold, and it works great. I understand that they now make an exact replacement that does not require the down pipe adapter or the compressor elbow.

I guess I need to replace the exhaust manifold also as I see it has developed a leak between the turbo and the exhaust manifold flange. Is this all just my luck or should I be looking for a larger problem that has triggered all of this.

The single piece oem exhaust manifold is prone to warping and/or cracking from the repeated heating/coolomng cycles it goes through.
It is likely that when you remove it and the turbo for rebuilding or replacing, you will not even be able to fit the oem exhaust manifold back onto the manifold studs. 250k is not a bad lifetime for a working used truck part…I would put the effort into upgrading the turbo AND exhaust manifold unless you cannot afford it.

Seafish here is what I am thinking if I am way off base here let me know. I can get new OEM turbo for $1000 no core charge oem Manifold for $200 shipped to me. This truck has become more of a farm truck I only put 10k miles on it last year and I don't see much of a change this year. I am finding it hard to justify putting $2200 or more in it for an upgraded turbo and manifold. If it was my daily truck that I was always pulling with I would probably go with the upgrade.

I'd say that you know what sounds about right for your habits…a ranch truck doesn't necessarily need a $2000 turbo upgrade. Just be SURE that you are getting an oem NEW turbo, or at least rebuilt from a REPUTABLE company like HTT (high tech turbo). Matter of fact , you might want to give HTT a call and see what they have in stock for rebuilds or how much they might want to rebuild yours and you might even get by for less.
