With the direction I am heading in performance parts, I am concerned about EGT's. After you review my signature, being that I have a HX35 12cm turbo, if I get into EGT problems will a 14cm or 16cm housing take care of the EGT problems? Or will I have to go to a HX40? Don't really want to go to the HX40 because of the loss of low end and towing performance.

Is anyone running similar components? What are your EGT's? What turbo housing are you using?

You'll probably want either the 16cm2 exhaust housing or the HX40.
I would HIGHLY recommend the HX40, it worked awesome for me(I had the 16cm2 housing). The turbo definetely had no lag problems, and from what I remember I was able to make around 30psi at 1800-1900rpm.
I guess the extent of your EGT problem would warrant what setup to use... ... I'd still recommend the HX40/16cm2 turbo for anything though!! #ad

Big Bob, On my 12 valve the 16 CM2 housing dropped my EGT by 300 + deg towing.

I worked with Piers of BD in the HX40 "Superturbo" project. It is much more effective in reducing backpressure and egt than just a housing change on the original HX35. E-mail me off-line if you want more info, as this topic has been thrashed quite a bit on the list previously.

Joe is totally right!!!
All I used the FL60 for was towing and the HX40/16cm2 worked AWESOME.
I don't think I can stress enough how pleased I was towing with the HX40!!! It responded MUCH better than what I expected with some whiners saying it lagged too much..... what a bunch of wimps!! #ad
Matter of fact It made me seriously wonder if I should have went with the HX50!!
That FL was a serious puller, in fourth gear, dry pavement if I was lightly loaded or empty it would spin the tires under throttle. Kinda startled me the first time it did as I was going up an on ramp onto the highway towing a camper and it started spinning in 4'th!! #ad

I've always been pleased with my HX40 w/16cm2 exhaust housing. There is no lag and we're making good power with it. I may have outgrown it at this point but for those that can afford one, it is a sweet piece. Otherwise go with the non-wastegated 16 to get rid of the heat.

Note: The 4" downpipe right off the exhaust housing. The downpipe I have now is a mandrel bent version with improved swept bends.

Big Bob, the HX 40 should work great with those big injectors you have coming. I consider it one of the best upgrades that I made so far. No lag, no egt worries, and great sound.

Big Bob,

Ever driven an HX40-equipped truck? YOu will find virtually NO low end loss. Who told you towing performance will suffer??? That is way off!

Some of those who've complained about low end lag problems may not have the correct or best P/N of the HX40 for their application. From experience I can tell you HVAC's Cummins has less turbo lag than my stocker 12cm housing, but part of that may be due to the extreme BOMBicity of the HVAC-mobile #ad

Bob go for an HX40. The Power Shop in Enumclaw does 'em and Evan can stick it in for ya.

Then you might give a new clutch some thought #ad

Evan,
I was reading a post by Ted Jennetty that said the HX40 was not for towing. See following thread and Ted's third post;
https://www.turbodieselregister.com/ubb//Forum3/HTML/000849.html

If the HX40 is compatible with towing, (not that I do alot of it at this time, but will in the future, looking for travel trailer) I'll have to get the clutch first then work on the HX40. May throw in a HX35 16cm housing for now just to help keep EGT's down.

Big Bob,

I have talked to several people who are running the HX40 and do a lot of heavy towing, and have nothing but good things to say. Main praise is the low exhaust temps the HX40 gives. Low end is great, and so is mid and high end.

If you go to a 16 housing on the HX35, you will need exhaust modification, as the 16cm (non-wastegated) housing is smaller.

Evan,
What type of modifications are you talking about with the 16cm housing? My turbo right now is a HX35 12cm. I do have a 4" Jardine system. Are you saying that I will have to modify my existing setup to accomodate the 16cm housing? or are you refering to the HX40? I know that I will have to get another down pipe with the HX40. <font size=-2>

Because the 16 cm2 housing for the HX35 does not have a wastegate, it is 1. 25" shorter than the 12. You have to slide the exhaust system forward that amount so the elbow will mate up to the back end of the housing.

Thanks Joe,
That's not a problem, exhaust system will slide that far without any problem. What is your opinion on the 16cm housing with my setup?

Big Bob, I would go for the 16 CM2 housing. I put one on mine and I notice no lag problems. Now if I could just get the clutch hooked I'd have all I want for now.

MikeR,

My e-brake went byebye with the HX40-16. Oh well, a temporary setback. A number of different mfgs make the 4" version that fit in the straight section under the cab. I am going to replace mine, but I haven't checked out all the mfgs & costs yet.

The HX40-16 gave me a solid, consistent 2mpg better on the hwy. In town is better by about . 5mpg. Spool up seems slightly delayed but doesn't hurt low end in the slightest. If it does, I can't feel it. Boost increases bunches faster than with the HX35. The boost needle screams up now.

EGT is lower & levels off now under full throttle, uphill with a load. There is obviously room for more fuel. #ad
