Hello everyone. My name is John Cronnelly and I just bought a 1992 D350 dually with a cummins in it. Ihave been reading tese forums and hv found them vey informative. I was wondering ifanyone can tell me where I might be able to find a smaller turbo housing fo my truck?

John

Look up either TST Products or Piers Diesel Research. They both have the 16cm housing for $150 or so. They were backordered when I called last week, but give them a call. :D

Welcome

 Welcome John, it looks like some others gave you the same advise as I was about to. You might think about some guages next like boost and pyro. The 16cm housing will be a real help and also some air thru a K&N or a bhaf to help her breathe. This is just the beginning of the fun you are about to have bringing this truck to life. Good luck. Tim:)

Heres a stupid question maybe along the same lines. When we change to a smaller turbo housing, are we changing the big rusty ol exhaust housing or the smaller painted intake housing?? Thanks. I've been searching for that answer for awhile, and havent found it or asked for it @! Bill

Turbo Housing

Bill,

The exhaust housing is the one that you change and is the rusty side hooked to the exhaust pipe. This part bolts to the exhaust manifold and supports the compressor side (painted). Hope that helps a bit. They can be a bear to change. If you change one, you will need the gasket for the oil drain and the steel gasket that goes between the turbo and the manifold. If you would like instructions on how to do the swap, let me know.

John, before you remove the old turbo housing, squirt some PB penetrating catalyst on the old housing nuts the night before to facilitate easier removal. This stuff can be purchased from any good auto parts store as well as Wal/Mart too. The installation of the 16cm housing is a noticeable improvement over the OEM installation. It should have been on from the start. It will oxygenate the fuel better. You will notice a big improvement in performance. You will like it.

This part really can't be over stated... ... . be prepared to have your hands full when you go to separate the housing from the turbo.

LOTS of PB or whatever you prefer is needed... and often some very serious "Wailing" on the exhaust end is needed to get it to pop off.

If you need to resort to violence with a small sledge then you need to wack it hard at 12:00 and 6:00, then, reach in and see if the pinwheel still turns without touching or rubbing noises, if it does wail on it at 9:00 and 3:00, repeat pinwheel spinning to make sure you are not binding.

You'll need someone to hold the drive end/side of the turbo while you inflict the violence and rotate the turbo.

It can be a bit tricky since binding can damage the pinwheel so be careful and take your time. .

You can try using the the 4 bolts that hold the exhaust side on, as kind of wedges or threaded levers to push the hot end off. You will need to put a "spacer" of some sort between the bolt heads and the compressor side for the bolts to "push on".

Between those things, you should be able to get it off. .

When you do get it off, take care not to bang or damage the pinwheel, and clean the mounting groove well, then apply anti-sieze to the groove, the bolts and the manifold/turbo bolts too.

This will help you if you ever need to remove it again.

Make sure when you put it back together, that the oil inlet and outlet are as verticle as possible so you get good supply/drain from the turbo.

Good luck... .

Bob.

I soaked my housing and bolts for a whole week before I tore it apart, It took no force to get it off besides 2 or 3 taps. I was using Liquid Wrench and thought very highly of it.
